CSUSM Travels to CUI Before Hosting Series Against Mines

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (1-2) will head to Concordia University Irvine (6-2-1) for a midweek game on Tuesday at 5 p.m. before coming back home to host Colorado School of Mines (8-0) in a four-game series beginning on Friday at 1 p.m.

LAST WEEK

  • CSUSM won its season opener against Regis on Feb. 6 by a score of 6-2 before falling 13-9 in the second game of the day’s doubleheader.
  • The Cougars were shut out by CUI last Tuesday at home, losing 7-0.
  • Both Griffin Teisher and Niko Diaz secured a hit in each of the team’s first three games.
  • Diaz recorded seven RBIs over the same stretch and is currently tied for 10th in the CCAA.
  • Teisher is currently leading the CCAA in on-base percentage at .636.

ROUND 2 AT CUI

  • After recording the shutout against the Cougars last Tuesday, the Eagles split a four-game home-and-home series against Cal State Dominguez Hills over the weekend to move to 6-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 at home.
  • Tuesday’s game will conclude the two-game season series against CUI.
  • This will be the 35th meeting in the all-time series between the Cougars and Eagles with CUI owning the all-time series at 20-14.
  • CSUSM is 7-13 when playing in Irvine.
  • This will be the Cougars’ first visit to Irvine since playing a three-game series against the Eagles in 2019.
  • Jackson Collins leads CUI’s offense with a .353 batting average, 10 runs, 12 hits, five doubles and 10 RBIs in nine games.

FIRST TIME MEETING AGAINST MINES

  • Friday will mark the first-ever meeting between CSUSM and Colorado School of Mines.
  • The Orediggers have yet to lose a game this season after sweeping their first two four-game series on the road at Fort Hays State and Rogers State.
  • As a team, Mines has the second-best team batting average in the RMAC at .304 with the best team ERA at 3.00.
  • In 31 at-bats, Luke Folsom leads Mines with a .419 batting average, nine runs, 13 hits, three home runs and 24 total bases.
  • In two starts, right-hander Tyler Blomster (2-0) has yet to allow a run in 15 innings of work on eight hits and one walk. He has recorded 20 strikeouts, a .151 opponent batting average, one complete-game shutout and a WHIP of .60.
  • Mines tied for fifth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 65-110 (.371) as CSUSM's head coach and is 240-346-1 (.410) for his entire head coaching career.
