RV/No. 16 CSUSM Collects 13th Straight Win with 51-42 Victory Over CPP

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV/No. 16 Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (17-2, 15-1 CCAA) continued its program-record win streak on Saturday, claiming it's 13th consecutive victory after defeating Cal Poly Pomona (6-14, 5-11 CCAA), 51-42, in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars trailed 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Three fast-break plays capped with two layups by Vasquez and one by Buckley cut CPP's lead to 22-19.
  • Back-to-back Hackson 3-pointers with three minutes remaining in the second quarter put CSUSM up 28-25.
  • The Cougars closed out the second quarter with 12 unanswered points to take a 31-25 lead into the break.
  • CSUSM shot 50% (8-of-16) from the field in the second quarter while holding the Broncos to just 3-of-14 (21.4%).
  • Vasquez led all scorers with 12 points and almost clinched a double-double in just the first 20 minutes with nine rebounds at halftime.
  • For six minutes and 36 seconds in the third quarter, neither team scored a field goal with the only points awarded coming from Hackson's two made free throws after CPP's bench was given a technical.
  • Hackson collected a steal and went the length of the court for a layup to put CSUSM up 41-31 with 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
  • The Cougars took their largest lead of the game at 44-31 on a Buckley jumper with 8:34 on the clock in the fourth quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, Pomona cut the CSUSM's lead down to 46-40 with a Monica Todd layup with 5:11 on the clock. Forrester responded with a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
  • Both teams combined for just 20 points in the fourth quarter with CSUSM having a two-point edge.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • CSUSM remains on top of the CCAA standings with a .938 win percentage with second-place Cal State East Bay facing seventh-place Humboldt State tonight at 5:30 p.m. in Arcata.
  • Vasquez secured her fourth consecutive double-double and eighth of the season in just the first 24 minutes of play.
  • The Cougars' 51 points is their lowest of the season, but on the flip side, CSUSM's defense allowed a season-low 42 points.
  • The Broncos collected 20 offensive boards – the most by CSUSM opponent this season.
  • Both teams recorded 22 points in the paint while CSUSM tallied eight points from fast breaks.
  • CSUSM led for 24:06 of the game while CPP was on top for only 14:19.
  • With the win, CSUSM is now 6-5 in the all-time series against the Broncos and 3-2 when playing in The Sports Center.
