Cougars Hosts APU in 2022 Home Opener

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos softball team (4-1) will play on its home field for the first time in 713 days on Friday when the Cougars host Azusa Pacific in a doubleheader beginning at noon. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • After going 4-1 last weekend at the Concordia University Irvine Kickoff Classic, the Cougars are off to their best start in program history since moving to NCAA Division II in 2015. 
  • Savannah Coyle was named Tournament MVP and joined Paige Donnelly on the All-Tournament Team (see below). 
  • The Cougars opened 2022 with a 5-0 victory over Montana State Billings before dropping a 7-6 10-inning heartbreaker to Azusa Pacific last Friday. CSUSM ended the weekend with three consecutive wins, defeating Dominican (2-1) and Western Oregon (10-1) before walking away with a 9-1 mercy-rule victory over Holy Names. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars are hitting .371 while holding their opponents to a .205 batting average.
  • In their first five games, the Cougars racked up 53 hits, eight doubles, four triples and two home runs. They pushed 30 runs across the plate while touching home 32 times.
  • CSUSM's pitching has been outstanding as well, allowing only four earned runs over 35.1 innings.
  • The Cougars held four of their five opponents to one run or less.
  • CSUSM's .371 batting average is the highest among CCAA teams. 
  • The Cougar pitching staff has a 0.79 ERA after five games, ranking second behind Cal State Monterey Bay who has a 0.00 ERA.

HOME OPENER VS. AZUSA PACIFIC

  • The two Cougars met last weekend in a three-hour 10-inning game that resulted in APU walking away with the 7-6 victory. Bianca Gutierrez went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs. 
  • CSUSM has faced APU 24 times, coming out on top 13 of those times. San Marcos has a 5-3 lead in the series when playing games at home. 
  • The last time CSUSM played APU at home was in 2015 when the teams split a doubleheader, 5-8 and 8-7. 
  • In 2021, APU played 36 games and finished the season at .500 overall and 7-17 against PacWest Conference opponents. 
  • Pitcher Sydnie Sahhar was named to the CUI Kickoff Classic All-Tournament Team after going 1-0 in three appearances and 14.0 innings, allowing only four earned runs off 13 hits and striking out 13. 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After seeing their 2020 season canceled after 19 games and sitting out the entire 2021 season, CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 season in Marissa Alvarez, Nikki Andelin, Zoe Ballen, Mayca Brown, Bianca Gutierrez, Gianna Lombardi, Kayla Mack, Sabrina Morales, Klarissa Munoz, Jamie Ponce and Ryann Steiner. 
  • Seven Cougars will take the field in Cougar blue for the first time this season - Paige Donnelly, Rachel Jardim, Mackenzie Kestler, Sammie Olivo, Jackie Ramirez, Morgan Salgado and Madison Waymire.
  • Joining the team in 2022 as true freshmen are Aneesa Arredondo, Savannah Coyle, Makenzie Guiliano, Delaney Prater and Jayline Sloss.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish eighth in the 2022 CCAA Softball Preseason Poll.

THE EWING FILE

  • Head coach Stef Ewing enters her second fourth in charge of the Cougar softball season, finishing the 2020 shorten season due to COVID-19 pandemic with a 7-12 record that ended with an exhibition game against Team USA that was preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
  • She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.
