No. 19/NR Cougars Face Westminster on Friday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 19/NR Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (2-1) will face Westminster on the neutral court of Felix Center on the campus of Azusa Pacific on Friday at 2 p.m. 


LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM went 2-1 in its first week of competition in 2022. 
  • The Cougars registered a 77-51 win in their season opener against cross-county rival Point Loma last Tuesday in The Sports Center
  • CSUSM then traveled to Washington to compete in the 2022 West Region Crossover Classic, recording a 70-62 victory over Seattle Pacific last Friday before falling 63-46 to host then-No. 2/1 Western Washington the next day. 


COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • Following th first week of games, Kelsey Forrester's 17.7 points per game rank second in the CCAA. 
  • Charity Gallego's 3-point field-goal percentage of 66.7 (8-of-12) rank sixth in Division II and first in the CCAA. 
  • The Cougars are averaging 9.7 turnovers per game, ranking them third in the nation and leading the CCAA.
  • CSUSM posted a 1.48 assist-turnover ratio in its first three games to rank sixth nationally and first in the conference. 
  • Offensively, the Cougars lead the CCAA and rank 20th in 3-pointers per game at 9.0.

NEUTRAL GAME AT WESTMINSTER

  • CSUSM and Westminster will meet for the very first time on Friday afternoon. 
  • Westminster opened the season with a pair of wins, 77-73 and 87-65, over University of Arkansas Fort Smith. 
  • The Griffins dropped back-to-back games to Northwest Nazarene (69-64) and Central Washington (87-76). 
  • Three Griffins are averaging double-digits in scoring with Ashley Greenwood leading the way with 19.5 points per game, followed by Lyndzi Rich (14.0) and Elizabeth Means (10.0). 
  • Greenwood is also Westminster's top rebounder at 6.8 per game. 
  • The Griffins' 47.3 field-goal percentage rank 27th in the nation and second in the RMAC. 
  • Westminster was voted to finish sixth in the 2022 RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

CONFERENCE FAVORITE

  • CSUSM was picked to finish first once again in the 2022-23 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll. 
  • The Cougars will start the new season ranked No. 12 in the WBCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll and No. 18 in the D2SIDA Top 25 Media Poll. 
  • Nine Cougars return for the 2022-23 season including All-CCAA first teamers Jordan Vasquez and Dynnah Buckner as well as second-team selection Kelsey Forrester
  • CSUSM adds three transfer, including sophomore Charity Gallegos (Chico State), redshirt junior Mina Tameilau (Cal State East Bay) and redshirt sophomore Malia Mastora (Seattle Pacific). 
  • Beginning their collegiate campaign in Cougar Blue this season are freshmen Tatum Tamashiro and Alina Tran


THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her eighth season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its twelfth season of existence.
  • In 2021-22, Jimenez earned her third career and second consecutive CCAA Coach of the Year honor. She previously earned the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars clinched their second consecutive CCAA Regular-Season Championship
  • After CSUSM's 2019-20 inaugural NCAA Division II West Regional appearance was cut short due to COVID-19, the Cougars were finally able to make their debut in the national tournament in 2021-22 as the No. 4 seed. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament three times, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by back-to-back finals appearance in 2019-20 and 2021-22.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 218-138 (.612) in her 14 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In her seven seasons at CSUSM, Jimenez has tallied a record of 93-67 (.581).
