No. 6/9 CSUSM Returns Home to Face SF State, CSUMB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 6/9 Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team (13-1, 9-1 CCAA) will return to The Sports Center this week to face San Francisco State (8-9, 5-5 CCAA) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before hosting Cal State Monterey Bay (8-4, 7-2 CCAA) on Saturday at 3 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars defeated Cal Poly Pomona by a score of 62-52 in its second consecutive overtime game last Thursday on the road.
  • Joel Mensah led the way against the Broncos with a career-high 19 points and nine field goals as CSUSM tallied its eighth double-digit win of the year.
  • CSUSM suffered its first loss of the season at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday in its third straight overtime game by a score of 74-64.
  • Greg Milton III led the game with a career-high 33 points ­– the most points scored by a Cougar since Ethan Alvano’s 38 against Cal State Monterey Bay on Jan. 13, 2018. His total also tied for the eighth most in program history and tied for the second-most points scored by a CCAA student-athlete this season.
  • The loss snapped the Cougars’ 13-game winning streak – the second longest in program history.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM maintained its top-10 status in the Division II national rankings as it moved to No. 6 in the NABC Top 25 Coaches Poll and No. 9 in the D2SIDA Top 25 National Media Poll on Tuesday.
  • Despite moving to No. 2 in the D2SIDA West Region Poll, the Cougars remain atop the CCAA standings with a .900 winning percentage.
  • The Cougars are one of five teams in Division II with one loss or fewer this season.
  • CSUSM continues to have the nation’s best 3-point field-goal defense at 25.6%.
  • With a turnover margin of 6.7, CSUSM leads the CCAA and ranks fifth nationally.
  • The Cougars have tallied the seventh-fewest turnovers in the nation this season with 148 and rank 21st for fewest turnovers per game with 10.6.
  • CSUSM’s scoring defense of 62.6 points allowed per game ranks ninth nationally and leads the conference. 
  • Scoring 77.9 points per game, the Cougars rank second in the CCAA.
  • Shooting 78.9% from the charity stripe, CSUSM leads the CCAA and ranks 11th nationally.
  • The Cougars are forcing the 14th-most turnovers per game in the nation and lead the league at 17.29 per game.
  • CSUSM is coming up with 9.6 steals per game – leading the CCAA and ranking 15th in the country.
  • Outscoring opponents by 15.2 points per game, the Cougars the nation’s 15th-best scoring margin and rank second in the CCAA.
  • CSUSM’ assist-turnover ratio of 1.24 leads the conference.
  • Jayce McCain’s free-throw percentage of 93.3% ranks fourth nationally and tops the CCAA.
  • Bake Seits’ 15.8 points per game lead the team and rank sixth in the conference.
  • CSUSM has four Cougars averaging double figures this season in Blake Seits (15.8), Jayce McCain (14.0), Greg Milton III (13.1) and Tyrone Nesby IV (10.5).
  • Seits is also the Cougars’ top rebounder at 5.6 per game.

THURSDAY AGAINST THE GATORS

  • CSUSM pounced on SF State in the first meeting of the season with an 89-55 victory on Dec. 11 in San Francisco. Greg Milton led CSUSM with 18 points while five Cougars tallied double figures.
  • The Gators split last week’s set of CCAA games with a 60-56 loss to then-No. 7/9 Chico State on Thursday before coming away with a 67-42 victory over Stanislaus State on Saturday.
  • SF State also defeated UC Santa Cruz in a midweek non-conference tilt by a score of 93-45.
  • The Gators are 4-1 over their last five games.
  • With a .500 winning percentage in CCAA play, the Gators are sixth in the conference standings.
  • SF State ranks 21st nationally for 3-point field-goal defense at 29.7% while shooting a conference low of 29.1%.
  • The Gators have tallied the most rebounds in the CCAA at 669 and are putting up the third-most rebounds per game at 39.35.
  • SF State has second-worst assist-turnover ratio in the league at 0.81 along with the second-most turnovers at 265.
  • Toby Okwuokei is the Gators’ leading scorer at 13.2 points per game.
  • CSUSM is 4-6 in the all-time series against SF State is 1-4 when playing the Gators in San Marcos.
  • The Cougars’ lone win over the Gators at home occurred in 2017 on New Year’s Eve.
  • With CSUSM’s win over SF State earlier in the season, the Cougars have won the last two games against the Gators.

WRAPPING UP THE WEEK AGAINST THE OTTERS

  • CSUSM came away with a 76-68 win over CSUMB in the first meeting of the season on Dec. 9 in Seaside. Greg Milton III led the Cougars with 26 points as CSUSM controlled the lead for all but 1:15.
  • After their defeat against the Cougars, the Otters have won five of their last six games.
  • The Otters won both of last weekend’s games against Stanislaus State (61-51) and against No. 7/9 Chico State (64-61).
  • Prior to facing the CSUSM on Saturday, CSUMB will head to Cal State Los Angeles on Thursday.
  • With a .778 winning percentage in CCAA play, the Otters are tied with Chico State for third place in the conference standings.
  • CSUMB was voted No. 8 in this week’s D2SIDA West Region Poll.
  • The Otters’ 3-point field-goal defense ranks fifth in the nation and third in the CCAA at 27.7%
  • CSUMB is coming up with the fifth-most defensive rebounds per game in Division II at 30.50 and ranks eighth for total rebounds per game at 42.17.
  • The Otters are next-to-last in the CCAA for assists per game (12.2), field-goal percentage (40.5), steals per game (5.7) and turnovers forced (12.67).
  • Levi Frankland is CSUMB leading scorer and ranks 17th in the CCAA at 13.1 points per game.
  • Andrew Ferguson ranks fifth in the league for rebounds per game at 8.2.
  • CSUSM is 7-2 in the all-time series against CSUMB and is a perfect 4-0 when playing the Otters in San Marcos.

SUSPENSION OF SPECTATORS / WATCH ON CCAA NETWORK

  • CSUSM temporarily suspended spectator attendance for men's and women's basketball games due to the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases in San Diego County. This temporary suspension will impact the following games:
    • Thursday, Jan. 27 vs. San Francisco State
    • Saturday, Jan. 29 vs. Cal State Monterey Bay
  • All contests will continue to be streamed live online via the CCAA Network at www.ccaanetwork.com/csusm
  • Fans may also download the CCAA Network app on your iOS or Android smartphone, tablet, or through web streaming devices such as Amazon Fire, Roku or Apple TV.  
  • On January 1st, the CCAA Network moved to a subscription-based model at just $9.95 per month.  Subscribers will have access to all CCAA broadcasts, both live and on-demand, for one low monthly price.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returns five student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Jayce McCain, Blake Seits, Alex Gil-Fernandez, Chase Bowsher and Sean Dunn.
  • Nine Cougars will be hitting the court in Cougar blue for the first time, including Division-I transfers Lyle Sutton (Idaho State), Tyrone Nesby IV (Wagner), Joel Mensah (James Madison and San Diego State) and Greg Milton III (Wyoming).
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Ethan Barnella, Jack Schultz and Garrett Hall will finally get the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshmen Max Lonneker and Donovan Watkins joined the roster this season.
  • CSUSM was picked to finished seventh in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE FOSTER FILE

  • Head coach B.J. Foster enters his sixth season in charge of the CSUSM Men's Basketball program after taking over the head position in 2016.
  • Under his leadership, the Cougars advanced to the CCAA Tournament for the first time in 2017-18 after finishing the season with a 15-7 conference record and a 20-9 overall record.
  • Prior to becoming head coach of the Cougars, Foster was an assistant coach with the team from 2013 to 2016.
  • Foster has tallied a career record of 72-55 (.567).
