NR/RV CSUSM Tops CSUSB, 75-48

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The NR/RV Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (11-2, 9-1 CCAA) led wire-to-wire for the second time this season to defeat Cal State San Bernardino (6-10, 3-7 CCAA) 75-48 on Saturday afternoon at Coussoulis Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM wasted no time by getting out to a quick 16-5 lead with five different Cougars contributing.
  • The Cougars shot 76.9% from the field in the first 10 minutes to take a 28-10 lead over the Coyotes.
  • CSUSB opened the second quarter with a 10-3 run to cut CSUSM's lead to 31-20.
  • The Coyotes outscored CSUSM 21-12 in the second quarter, but the Cougars remained on top at the break with a 40-31 lead.
  • In the first 20 minutes, CSUSM shot 50% (15-of-30) from the field while holding the Coyotes to 35.3% (12-of-34).
  • Twelve of CSUSM's points came off San Bernardino's 11 turnovers in the first half.
  • In the first half, Hackson led all scorers with 11 points while Kate Carlson chipped in eight off the bench.
  • The Cougars began the third quarter with nine unanswered points to take a 49-31 lead, capped by a Forrester 3-pointer.
  • CSUSM's defense held the Coyotes to just two points in the third quarter to take a 60-33 lead into the final 10 minutes.
  • The Cougars took their largest lead of the game at the 2:04 mark in the fourth quarter on made free throw by Shasta Park to make it 73-42.
  • CSUSM shot 52% (13-of-25) from the field that included four 3-pointers in the second half. On defense, the Cougars held CSUSB to just 18.8% (6-of-32) in the final 20 minutes.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • The Cougars dished out a season-best 21 assists with Hackson tallying seven in the contest.
  • CSUSM shot over 50% for the fourth time this season, matching its 50.9% from Thursday's win at Cal Poly Pomona.
  • CSUSB's 27.3 field-goal percentage (18-of-66) was the lowest by a CSUSM opponent this season.
  • The Coyotes' 48 points were the lowest scored by a Cougar opponent in 2021-22.
  • The Cougars continued to dominate their opponents in the paint, registering 32 points while only allowing San Bernardino 16.
  • CSUSM collected 21 points off fast breaks while CSUSB only tallied three.
  • The Cougars converted 17 points off 16 Coyote turnovers.
  • Hackson and Forrester each recorded season highs in assists, finishing with seven and six, respectively.
  • With the win, the Cougars hold a 6-3 lead in the all-time series against CSUSB and extended their win streak to four.
  • CSUSM tallied less turnovers than its opponent for the 11th time this season, finishing with 14 to San Bernardino's 16.
