Hot 3-Point Shooting Leads to CSUSM Win at CSULA

LOS ANGELES – Knocking down a program-record 13 3-pointers, the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (7-2, 5-1 CCAA) started off 2022 with a 75-54 CCAA road victory at Cal State LA (4-6, 3-3 CCAA) on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars got off to a strong start, winning the tip and Vasquez scoring on an easy layup in the first five seconds of the game.
  • CSUSM went up 8-4 before the Golden Eagles came roaring back to take a 9-8 lead on a Jada Johnson layup.
  • The Cougars went on an 11-0 run to close out the first quarter with a 24-11 lead over CSULA.
  • CSUSM outscored the Golden Eagles 17-14 to take a 41-25 lead into the halftime break.
  • In the first half, the Cougars scored 17 of their points off turnovers while CSULA only capitalized with four.
  • CSUSM outshot the Golden Eagles 42.9% to 31.6% from the field in the opening half.
  • The Cougars sunk nine 3-pointers in the first half, six in the first 10 minutes, while holding CSULA to a 0-of-8 performance from beyond the arc.
  • With 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Deannah Buckner's 3-pointer from the top of the arc tied the CSUSM single-game record for 3-pointers at 12.
  • A Sydney Buckley 3-pointer at the 9:05 mark of the fourth quarter broke the CSUSM single-game record, raising CSUSM's total to 13 in the game.
  • CSUSM's largest lead of the game came at the 7:27 mark of the fourth quarter when Hackson scored on a layup to make it 69-40.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • The Cougars defense held the No. 1 Division II 3-point leader Nicole Flennaugh scoreless from behind the arc (0-of-7).
  • CSULA finished the 40 minutes at 1-of-16 from the 3-point line, its worst outing from behind the arc since Dec. 14, 2019 against Central Washington when the Golden Eagles went 0-of-11.
  • In addition to breaking the program's single-game 3-point record, the Cougars shot their best 3-point field-goal percentage of the season at 41.9%.
  • CSUSM registered its lowest foul count of the 2021-22 season with 12.
  • The Cougars matched their season high of 20 assists which they set against the Golden Eagles in their first meeting on Nov. 27.
  • CSUSM's six blocked shots against the Golden Eagles were a season best.  
  • The Cougars won the battle of the boards at 43-39.
  • CSUSM racked up 19 points off CSULA turnovers.
  • The Cougars led for 38:47 of the game while LA was on top for only 41 seconds.
  • Vasquez collected her fourth double-double of the 2021-22 season after tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds.  
  • Hackson registered her first double-double of the season, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
