Cougars Close Out 2021 at CSUMB, SF State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (4-2, 2-1 CCAA) takes to the road for the first time for CCAA play to close out the calendar year, traveling to Cal State Monterey Bay (1-6, 0-3 CCAA) on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. game and San Francisco State (4-3, 2-1 CCAA) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.  

PREVIOUS WEEKEND

  • The Cougars went 1-1 last weekend, recording a 71-65 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday before dropping a 64-56 decision to Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
  • With CSUSM's victory over CSUDH, Head Coach Renee Jimenez picked up her 200th career win.
  • Akayla Hackson recorded her second-highest scoring performance with 26 points for the fourth time in her CSUSM career in the CSUDH win. 
  • Against CSUEB, Jordan Vasquez registered her third double-double of the season with 15 points and a season-best 15 rebounds.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • In the fourth week of the D2SIDA West Region Poll, CSUSM moved down to the seventh spot. Fellow CCAA opponents Cal State East Bay (7-1, 3-0 CCAA) jumped up to third while Stanislaus State (7-1, 3-0 CCAA) is now in the sixth spot.
  • With her four steals this weekend, Akayla Hackson raised her CSUSM career total to 100 to pull even with former Cougar Alex Alvarado (2011-15) for second all-time. In just her two years at CSUSM, Sarah Jackson (2011-13) recorded 147 steals.
  • Hackson is fifth all-time for career made free throws at CSUSM with 176. She's just seven away from Savannah Camp's 183 (2015-18) and 10 away from former teammate Stephanie Custodio (2017-19).
  • The Cougars’ 1.05 assist-turnover ratio ranks second in the CCAA and 41st in the nation. 
  • CSUSM leads the CCAA and ranks 55th in Division II in scoring offense, averaging 73.5 per game. 
  • Jordan Vasquez has a conference-leading 57.9 field-goal percentage, ranking her 34th in Division II.   
  • Vasquez is averaging a CCAA-high 4.7 offensive rebounds per game, ranking her 49th in the nation. 
  • With three double-doubles this season, Vasquez is tied for first in the CCAA alongside Cal State LA's Lily Buggs and Asia Jordan of Cal State Dominguez Hills. 
  • Shooting 51.4% from beyond the arc, Kelsey Forrester ranks ninth in Division II.

THURSDAY AT CSUMB

  • The Otters' lone victory thus far this season was a 53-46 win at Holy Names on Nov. 23.
  • CSUMB opened CCAA play with a 64-45 loss at San Francisco State before dropping back-to-back games last weekend at Sonoma State (49-40) and Humboldt State (65-59).
  • Thursday's game will be CSUMB's home opener as the Otters started the season on a seven-game road trip.
  • CSUSM is 7-2 in the all-time series against CSUMB and are on a six-game win streak.
  • The Otters have the third-worst assist-turnover ratio (0.29) in Division II.
  • CSUMB's lone conference-leading stat is in 3-point field goal defense, holding opponents to a 22.6 average which ranks 30th in the nation.
  • CSUMB's leading scorer is UC Riverside transfer Lauryn Pointer who is averaging 13.0 points per game in her three games played.
  • Freshman guard Emily Perez has started every game for the Otters and is averaging 10.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.43 steals per game.
  • In 2019-20, CSUMB finished with a 6-18 overall record and were 6-16 in the CCAA. The Otters were 10th in the conference standings.

SATURDAY AT SF STATE

  • SF State will host Cal State LA on Thursday before facing the Cougars on Saturday.
  • Saturday's game will be the final game of the calendar year for both teams.
  • After opening CCAA play with a 64-45 win over CSUMB, the Gators split last weekend by falling 58-56 at Humboldt State before rebounding with a 61-55 win at Sonoma State.
  • The Cougars hold a 6-2 lead in the all-time series against the Gators and have a three-game win streak when playing in San Francisco.
  • CSUSM swept the 2019-20 series against the Gators, recording a 55-43 win in San Marcos before registering an 81-52 victory at SF State.
  • The Gators rank second in the CCAA in turnovers forced, pushing opponents to average 22.14 per game.
  • SF State is recording a CCAA-low 30.57 rebounds per game, which ranks the Gators 288th out of 297 schools in Division II.
  • Mya Blake is SF State's leading scorer, averaging 14.6 points per game while dishing out a team-high 15 assists in seven games.
  • Taimane Lesa-Hardee is leading the conference in steals per game (3.14) and steals (22), ranking her 14th and 19th, respectively, in the nation.
  • The Gators were picked to finish 10th in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Women's Basketball Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returned seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars hit the court in Cougar blue for the first time this season, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally got the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 200-136 (.595) in her 12 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
