RV/RV CSUSM Set to Open CCAA Play at Home Against Cal State LA

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Heading into CCAA play with an unblemished record, the RV/RV Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team (4-0) will host Cal State LA (2-2) at The Sports Center on Saturday at 3 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM pummeled then-No.24/9 Point Loma by a score of 90-52 this past Saturday at The Sports Center.
  • Five Cougars had double-digit point totals with Tyrone Nesby IV leading the way with 19.
  • PLNU was the highest-ranked team CSUSM had ever defeated in the Division II era (2015-present) with a ranking of No. 9 in the D2SIDA Media Poll.
  • The win was CSUSM's first over a ranked team inside The Sports Center since its opening in 2016.
  • The Cougars' 38-point margin of victory was its largest-ever against an NCAA Division II institution, and it was their largest since defeating West Coast Baptist by 50 in 2017-18.
  • The Cougars' two turnovers were their fewest in program history and currently rank as the fewest by a Division II team this season. CSUSM joins Division-I teams South Alabama and Drexel as the only teams in the entire NCAA with two turnovers committed in a game this season.
  • CSUSM held PLNU to just 8.3% (2-of-24) from three.
  • This marks the first time in the Division II era the Cougars have opened a season 4-0 with the last time occurring in the 2013-14 season.

  • CSUSM received votes in both the NABC Top 25 Coaches Poll and DSIDA Top 25 Media Poll released on Tuesday.
  • After its win on Saturday, CSUSM was ranked fourth in the latest D2SIDA Men’s Basketball West Region Poll. The Cougars came in behind top-ranked Chico State, second-place Cal State San Bernardino and third-place Cal Poly Pomona.
  • CSUSM has the sixth-best turnover margin in Division II at 9.2.
  • Holding opponents to 23.9% from three, the Cougars have the ninth-best 3-point field-goal defense in the country.
  • CSUSM is averaging 11.2 steals per game – 13th best in Division II.
  • The Cougars have the 15th-best scoring defense in the nation at 59.8 points allowed per game.
  • CSUSM is forcing 18.75 turnovers per game ­– 18th most in Division.
  • The Cougars are only committing 9.5 turnovers per game ­– the fewest in the CCAA and 18th fewest in Division II.
  • Outscoring opponents by 19 points per game, CSUSM’s scoring margin ranks 22nd nationally and leads the CCAA.
  • The Cougars’ assist-turnover ratio of 1.32 leads the CCAA.
  • CSUSM has the third-best scoring offense in the conference at 78.8 points per game.
  • Shooting 46.2% from the field, the Cougars rank third in the CCAA.
  • The Cougars are hitting 80.6% (54-of-67) of their free throws this season – second best in the conference.
  • Jayce McCain leads the CCAA and ranks 34th nationally with 2.75 steals per game. His 11 total steals lead the league and rank 22nd in Division II.
  • Blake Seits leads the Cougars and ranks second in the conference with 21.2 points per game.

CCAA OPENER AGAINST CAL STATE LA

  • CSULA is 2-2 to begin the season and will play Azusa Pacific on Tuesday night prior to the CCAA opener on Saturday.
  • The Golden Eagles began the season with losses to Biola and Concordia University Irvine before earning their first wins against Simon Fraser and Bethesda this past week.
  • CSULA leads the CCAA and ranks 24th in Division II with 18.8 assists per game.
  • The Golden Eagles lead the CCAA with 4.0 blocked shots per game.
  • Shooting 41% from three, CSULA leads the CCAA and ranks 34th nationally.
  • The Golden Eagles are forcing the fewest turnovers per game in the CCAA at 12.75.
  • Allowing 87.2 points, CSULA has the worst scoring defense in the conference and rank 274th nationally.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returns five student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Jayce McCain, Blake Seits, Alex Gil-Fernandez, Chase Bowsher and Sean Dunn.
  • Nine Cougars will be hitting the court in Cougar blue for the first time, including Division-I transfers Lyle Sutton (Idaho State), Tyrone Nesby IV (Wagner), Joel Mensah (James Madison and San Diego State) and Greg Milton III (Wyoming).
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Ethan Barnella, Jack Schultz and Garrett Hall will finally get the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshmen Max Lonneker and Donovan Watkins joined the roster this season.
  • CSUSM was picked to finished seventh in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE FOSTER FILE

  • Head coach B.J. Foster enters his sixth season in charge of the CSUSM Men's Basketball program after taking over the head position in 2016.
  • Under his leadership, the Cougars advanced to the CCAA Tournament for the first time in 2017-18 after finishing the season with a 15-7 conference record and a 20-9 overall record.
  • Prior to becoming head coach of the Cougars, Foster was an assistant coach with the team from 2013 to 2016.
  • Foster has tallied a career record of 63-54 (.538)
