Cougars Open CCAA Tournament Play Against SF State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (12-12, 9-9 CCAA) will be making its fourth consecutive appearance in the CCAA Tournament on Thursday when the Cougars take on San Francisco State (21-4, 14-4 CCAA) at 5 p.m. in Coussoulis Arena on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • CSUSM went the distance in five sets in both matches, falling just short in both in the Cougars' final weekend of the regular season.
  • The Cougars started strong at San Francisco State last Friday, taking the first two sets at 25-23 and 25-22 before dropping the final three, 23-25, 21-25 and 8-15.
  • Saturday's match at Cal State Monterey Bay was a repeat of Friday's as the Cougars took the first two before falling in the last three (25-23, 25-16, 24-26, 20-25, 10-15).
  • Madison Turner notched her 16th and 17th double-doubles of the season, recording 39 assists and 15 digs at SF State before tallying 40 assists and 14 digs at CSUMB.

ALL-CCAA HONORS

  • Three Cougars earned All-CCAA honors in 2021, raising CSUSM's total to 15 in five seasons.
  • Collecting her first postseason nod, Kassy Doering was named to the All-CCAA first team. She is the third Cougar in the program to earn this honor, joining Maddy Newcombe (2017) and Samantha Flores (2016).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr and Madison Turner were designated as honorable mentions.
  • This is the third time Cordero-Barr has earned All-CCAA honors as she was named second team in 2019 and an honorable mention during her freshman year in 2017.
  • Turner earned her first CCAA nod after dishing out 9.83 assists per set this season, ranking her third in the conference.

CCAA TOURNAMENT

  • On Thursday, the Cougars enter the 2021 CCAA Tournament as the sixth seed.
  • CSUSM has qualified for the conference tournament since 2017 when the Cougars became eligible for postseason.
  • The CCAA Tournament field was reduced from eight team to six teams in 2021.
  • It is a single-elimination event with four teams (Seeds No. 3-6) playing on Thursday, Nov. 18. The two winners advance to Friday, Nov. 19 to play in two semifinal matches against top-seed Cal State San Bernardino and No. 2-seed Cal Poly Pomona. The two semifinal match winners will meet in the Championship match on Saturday, Nov. 20.
  • The other match on Thursday will feature fourth-seed Cal State LA and fifth-seed Sonoma State at 7:30 p.m. 
  • CSUSB is the four-time defending CCAA Tournament champion with Sonoma State taking the honor in the inaugural event in 2015. 
  • In 2019, CSUSM recorded the program's first-ever win in tournament history with a five-set thriller (24-26, 25-22, 15-25, 25-18, 15-8) against fourth-seed Stanislaus State. 
  • Olivia Aguilar is CSUSM's only two-time CCAA All-Tournament honoree (2018, 2019). Cordero-Barr joined Aguilar on the 2019 team. 
  • This will be CSUSM's third time facing San Francisco State and the second time in less than a week. 
  • The Cougars pulled off a five-set come-from-behind victory (22-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-13) over the Gators on Sept. 18 in The Sports Center. 
  • SF State got revenge on Nov. 12, posting its own come-from-behind win (23-25, 22-25, 25-24, 25-21, 15-8) in The Swamp. 
  • The Gators had four named to the All-CCAA team with Trinity Barr and Jessica Haynie earning first team honors, Drew Morris taking second team honors and Izzy Issak getting an honorable mention. 
  • Haynie was named the AVCA National Player of the Week for Nov. 8-14. 
  • All four of SF State's losses in 2021 occurred on the road, and the Gators did not play any neutral-site games this season. 
  • CSUSM is 5-7 on the road this season and 1-2 when playing on a neutral court. 

 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returned five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time in 2021 with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the 2019 CCAA leader in digs per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 185-125 (.596) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 277-249 (.527) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
