Cougars Compete at Sixth-Annual Lewis Crossover

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 20 Cal State San Marcos women's cross country team will travel to Romeoville, Illinois, on Saturday, Oct. 9 to compete in the Lewis Conference Crossover. 

PREVIOUS RACE

  • Then-No. 24 CSUSM placed third with a score of 71 at the Cougar Challenge on Sept. 25 at Mangrum Track & Field.
  • No. 13 Chico State (60) edged out then-No. 6 Stanislaus State (62) by two points to take the team title.  
  • Renee Laurenzana led the Cougars with a seventh-place finish out of 139 runners with a time of 21:20.7.
  • This was CSUSM's first 6K of the 2021 season.

 LEWIS CROSSOVER LOOPS

  • The 2021 Lewis Conference Crossover will feature 27 team from 16 states.
  • Seven teams are ranked in the USTFCCCA Top 30 - No. 1 Grand Valley State, No. 15 Walsh, No. 19 Minnesota Duluth, No. 20 CSUSM, No. 21 Colorado Christian, No. 24 Wayne State (Mich.), No. 28 Saginaw Valley State.
  • Humboldt State and Sonoma State are the only other two CCAA schools competing in Illinois.
  • From the West Region, PacWest Conference's Biola and Concordia University Irvine, and GNAC's Western Oregon will also be there.
  • This will be CSUSM's third appearance in the Lewis Crossover.
  • The Cougars took 12th place out of 28 teams with Lisa Flora leading the charge with a 21st-place finish in a time of 22:39.6.
  • In 2019, CSUSM placed 10th out of 36 teams at the Lewis Crossover. Jax Heckers was the Cougars' top finisher at 54th place with a time of 23:44.9.

 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • The Cougars return 13 runners from the 2019 season.
  • Six runners will be donning Cougar Blue this season with Maria Texis being the lone true freshman.
  • CSUSM placed sixth at the 2019 CCAA Championships and eighth at the NCAA West Regional.
  • The Cougars were picked fifth in the CCAA Women's Cross Country Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • In Week 4 of the 2021 NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country National Rankings, as released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA), CSUSM is ranked No. 20. 
  • In the West Region rankings, the Cougars slipped up one spot to No. 4 with Simon Fraser moving up to the top spot, followed by Chico State (CCAA) and Stanislaus State (CCAA).

THE OLSEN FILE

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his fourth season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In his first two seasons at the helm of the men's and women's cross country programs, the men's team claimed second in back-to-back appearances of the CCAA Championships while the women earned third and sixth.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
