Cougars Fall in Series Opener Against No. 3/2 UCSD

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team suffered a 12-3 loss in its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series opener against No. 3/2 UC San Diego on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After Luna reached on an infield error and advanced to second on an overthrown pickoff attempt, he scored on an RBI single to left center by Bahna. After a groundout moved Bahna to second, he scored on an RBI single to right center by Stuka.
  • UCSD took control of the game in the top of the third inning by going up 4-2. The Tritons scored on an RBI single by Anthony Lucchetti before Ryan McNally brought another run home after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Devon Hawks rounded out the scoring with a two-run single to center.
  • Hawks brought home another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI bunt single to give the Tritons a 5-2 lead.
  • The Cougars grounded into a double play in the bottom of the fifth, but Meza was able to score from third on the play and cut the deficit to 5-3.
  • UCSD scored on a pair of bases-loaded walks in the top of the sixth to go up 7-3.
  • In his first at-bat after taking over as the new catcher for the Tritons, Nick Kitzmann blasted a two-out three-run homer to left in the top of the eighth to give UCSD a 10-3 lead.
  • The Tritons wrapped up the scoring in the top of the ninth on a solo shot to center by Shay Whitcomb and a bases-loaded walk by pinch hitter Jack Tomlinson.

  • CSUSM falls to 4-15 (3-10 CCAA) while UCSD improves to 14-4 (9-4 CCAA).
  • UCSD starter Cameron Leonard (3-0) earned the win as he struck out five in 6.0 innings while allowing three runs (two unearned) on seven hits and a wild pitch.
  • Cougar starter Jeremy Wiegman (2-3) took the loss as he struck out seven in 5.0 innings while allowing five runs on five hits, four walks, three hit-by-pitches and three wild pitches.
  • Bahna's team-leading hitting streak now stands at 17 games.
  • CSUSM was held without an extra-base hit for the fourth time this season.
  • The Cougars' pitching staff allowed 11 walks and hit four Triton batters.
