SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team fell 8-3 in the series opener against crosstown-foe Saint Katherine on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- With runners on first and second after back-to-back walks, USK's Trevor Castillo hit a three-run homer down the left field line on the first pitch to put the Firebirds up 3-0 in the top of the second inning,
- CSUSM made it 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning as Schuberg hit an RBI triple down the right field line to score Stuka from first.
- The Firebirds went up 4-1 in the top of the fifth as John Freeman scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch with two outs.
- Stuka's sacrifice fly to right field with one out in the bottom of the fifth scored Teisher and cut the deficit to 4-2.
- USK took a 6-2 lead in the top of the sixth as Castillo hit a one-out RBI double down the left field line before Baker Springstun hit an RBI single to right center to score Castillo.
- In the top of the eighth, Springstun hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Cody Gracco and made it a 7-2 ballgame.
- USK scored its final run of the game in the top of the ninth as Aidan Cacciatore hit a one-out RBI single to left to score Alex Cansino from third.
- Down 8-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, Stuka tallied his second sac fly of the game with one out to score Teisher from third, but a line out to center after his at-bat ended the game.

QUICK HITS
- CSUSM drops to 0-4 while USK improves to 8-1.
- Firebird reliever Anthony Pizzo (2-0) earned the win after throwing 2.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts while allowing two runs on four hits and two hit-by-pitches.
- Cougar starter Garrett Apker (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while matching his career high with seven strikeouts.
- USK's Marcus Christy picked up the four-inning save (1) as he struck out four while allowing one unearned run on four hits and a walk.
- This was the first-ever meeting between CSUSM and USK.
- Teisher improved his hitting streak to four games.
