CSUSM Splits Opening Doubleheader Against SSU

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team split its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader against Sonoma State with a 12-3 loss to start the day before chalking up a 10-8 win to end the day on Friday at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Seawolves got the game started with an RBI double in the first inning by Drew Downing.
  • Up 1-0, SSU tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI double down the left field line by Trevor Mallett.
  • The Cougars cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double down the left field line by Garcia.
  • SSU took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of RBI singles by James Harwell and Ben Sanderson.
  • Luna hit an RBI single through the right side to make the score 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • An RBI single through the right side by Harwell made it a 5-2 game in the top of the sixth.
  • The Seawolves struck for seven runs on two hit-by-pitches, a Cougar error, two walks, a passed ball, an RBI double and a solo home run in the top of the eighth to go up 12-2.
  • Teisher concluded the scoring for CSUSM as he scored Mario Duarte on an RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the ninth.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM fell to 3-12 (2-7 CCAA) while SSU improved to 4-10 (3-6 CCAA).
  • SSU starter Jake Dent (1-3) earned the win as he went 6.2 innings with three strikeouts while allowing two runs on six hits and two walks.
  • Dylan Wannamaker (0-3) took the loss for CSUSM as he went 4.0 innings with four strikeouts while allowing three runs on five hits and a hit-by-pitch.
  • SSU head coach John Goelz collected his 1,100th career win – all in 35 years as the Seawolves' skipper.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Garcia scored Bahna on an RBI double to right center in the bottom of the first and gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
  • SSU took a brief 2-1 lead in the top of the second as Marcos Rivas scored on an RBI-bunt single to the pitcher before James Harwell hit a sacrifice fly to left.
  • A two-run bomb to left center by Lopez in the bottom of the second regained the lead for the Cougars at 3-2.
  • CSUSM went up 5-2 in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly to center by Stuka and an SSU infield error.
  • On a tough popup to just in front of the mound in the bottom of the sixth by Zach Schuberg, SSU missed on the diving grab and Luna beat the throw home to put CSUSM up 6-2. Schuberg advanced to second on the throw home before taking a vacant third base on the play.
  • The Cougars went up 8-2 in the bottom of the seventh as Stuka scored on a wild pitch before Dominic Meza scored Ethan Ellis with an RBI single to left.
  • SSU's Ben Sanderson scored on a CSUSM throwing error in the top of the eighth to make it 8-3.
  • CSUSM scored its final two runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth as Luna scored on a wild pitch before Bahna scored on an RBI single up the middle by Teisher.
  • In the top of then ninth, the Seawolves' Bryce Vitt drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit to 10-4. Pinch hitter Trevor Mallett then hit a grand slam to left and made it a 10-8 game. Graham Cumming came out of the bullpen for CSUSM's final out and ended the game on a flyout to left.

  • CSUSM improved to 4-12 (3-7 CCAA) while SSU dropped to 4-11 (3-7 CCAA).
  • Cougar starter Jeremy Wiegman (2-2) earned the win by throwing 5.0 innings with two strikeouts while allowing two runs on four hits, six walks and a hit-by-pitch.
  • SSU starter Robert Towne (0-3) took the loss as he allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out one.
  • Bahna's team-leading hitting streak now stands at 14 games.
  • In the all-time series, CSUSM is now 7-9 against SSU and is 6-3 at home.
