CSUSM Drops Twinbill at CSUSB

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games, 6-5 and 11-3 (6 inn.), to Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the third inning, the Coyotes scored five runs on six hits that included an RBI double by Sandra Carroll and a two-RBI double by Madison Veldman.
  • CSUSB extended its lead to 6-0 in the next frame as Carroll scored on a wild pitch.
  • CSUSM took over the scoring run in the fifth inning on Andelin's RBI single up the middle scored Paredez.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Cougars posted three runs on five hits and a CSUSB error as Lombardi led off the inning with a double and scored on Brittney Scardina's single to right. Paredez's RBI single up the middle plated Scardina, and Bianca Gutierrez rounded out CSUSM's scoring with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Jaqlyn Newhouser, who reached on a single.
  • With runners on the corners and two outs, CSUSM took advantage of a passed ball to score and made it 6-5, but a pop up ended the seventh-inning rally.

  • The Cougars fell to 5-7 (3-4 CCAA) while CSUSB moved up to 7-5 (5-2 CCAA).
  • CSUSM outhit the Coyotes 12-8, but CSUSB recorded three doubles to the Cougars' one.
  • Jamie Ponce (2-4) took the loss after 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on five hits and striking out one batter.
  • Kendra O'Cull (3-4) tossed her second complete game of the series to earn the win, relinquishing five runs (four earned) on 12 hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Carroll scored on a wild pitch after leading off with a double to left.
  • In the next frame, Carroll hit a three-run homer before the Coyotes scored two more on Veldman's single to center to take a 6-0 lead.
  • The Cougars scored one run in the next three frames that included home runs by Andelin and Lombardi to make it 6-3.
  • CSUSB put together a five-run sixth inning on five hits, three walks and a wild pitch to end the game early due to the eight-run rule.
 
QUICK HITS
  • The Cougars dropped to 5-8 (3-5 CCAA) on the season while the Coyotes improved to 8-5 (6-2 CCAA).
  • CSUSM starter Zoe Ballen (3-2) took the loss after 1.2 innings in the circle, giving up six runs on five hits and walking three.
  • Taylor De'Tinne (3-1) went five innings to earn the win, relinquishing three runs on five hits.
  • O'Cull tossed a shutout inning in the sixth to earn her second save of the season.

UP NEXT
The Cougars return home next week to host Cal State Dominguez Hills in a four-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at noon.
