Record-Setting Shooting Lifts Cougars to 79-63 Win Over CPP

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV/NR Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team shot a program-best 55.6% en route to a 79-63 conference victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon in The Sports Center. The win moves the Cougars back into first place alongside Cal State East Bay in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buckner got off to a hot start, scoring seven points in the opening six minutes of play.
  • All five lead changes in the game came in the first quarter as CSUSM closed it out with a 16-11 lead over the Broncos.
  • Forel's layup at the 3:21 mark gave the Cougars their biggest lead of the first half at 30-17.
  • The Cougars shot 50% (9-of-18) from the field to take a 30-21 lead into the locker room.
  • CSUSM's defense held the Broncos to just a 28.0 field-goal percentage in the first half.
  • Hackson's 4-point play with 1:08 remaining in the third quarter lifted the Cougars to a 50-41 lead.
  • CSUSM ended the third quarter with a 52-43 lead over the Broncos.
  • The Cougars went back to a double-digit lead (57-45) on Forrester's third 3-pointer of the game at 7:13 of the fourth quarter.
  • CSUSM got its biggest lead of the game of 19 points (72-53) after a pair of made free throws by Buckner with 1:51 remaining in the game.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • CSUSM improved to 14-3 (9-3 CCAA) while the Broncos dropped to 11-7 (7-5 CCAA).
  • Forel notched her fifth consecutive double-double in points and rebounds.
  • This marks the fifth time this season CSUSM has shot above 50% from the field. Prior to this season, CSUSM highest field-goal percentage was 46.3% against Biola on Jan. 7, 2015.
  • Forrester shot lights out, going 5-of-5 from the field, 4-of-4 from behind the arc and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
  • With CSUSM's two wins this season against CPP, the Cougars have closed the gap in the all-time series to 4-5 against the Broncos.
  • With both teams committing 17 turnovers, CSUSM collected 23 points while the Broncos only capitalized with nine points off turnovers.
  • The Cougars shot 83.3% (20-of-24) from the charity stripe while CPP recorded 70.8% (17-of-24).
  • CSUSM also shot a season-best 64.3% from behind the 3-point line.
