Cougars Fall on Last-Second Three to CPP in Overtime

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team dropped an overtime heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, falling 71-70 to No. 20/RV Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down 14-6, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to close the gap capped by Goudeau's 3-pointer at 11:57 in the first half.
  • A jumper by McCain at 6:26 in the first period gave CSUSM the lead at 23-22.
  • The Cougars held the lead until halftime, taking a 29-26 advantage into the locker room.
  • CSUSM recorded eight second-chance points while CPP finished the half with zero.
  • The first half contained four lead changes and one tie.
  • Seits' 11 points made him the only player in double figures at the half.
  • The Broncos took their first lead of the second half on a 3-pointer by Demetrius Williams to make it 49-48 with 9:11 remaining.
  • A 3-pointer by McCain put CSUSM up 55-53 with 7:20 on the clock.
  • The Broncos would even the game twice before taking a 60-59 lead over CSUSM on a dunk by Justin Young with 1:23 remaining.
  • Gil-Fernandez sunk his first free throw to even the game at 60-all before CPP called a 30-second timeout with 5.4 seconds on the clock.
  • After Gil-Fernandez missed his second shot, CPP attempted a last-second shot from behind the arc, but it was no good.
  • McCain drove down the lane for a layup for the first bucket in overtime and put CSUSM up 62-60 with 3:55 on the clock.
  • CPP answered with a 3-pointer by Riley Schaefer to put the Broncos up 63-62 with three minutes remaining.  
  • Gil-Fernandez's layup at 2:18 put the Cougars back on top at 64-63.
  • Seits sunk his fourth 3-pointer, this time an NBA 3-pointer, to extend CSUSM's lead to 67-63 with 1:23 to go in overtime.
  • CPP's William Christmas did a spin move in the paint to close the score to 67-65.
  • On a pass from McCain, Seits connected on another 3-pointer to make it 70-65 with 37 seconds on the clock.
  • Christmas notched a layup and made one of his two free throws to make it a 70-68 ballgame with 13.7 seconds.
  • A 3-pointer by Schaefer with three seconds remaining gave the Broncos the 71-70 win.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • CSUSM dropped to 8-10 (4-8 CCAA) while the Broncos moved to 13-4 (9-3 CCAA).
  • The Cougars won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Broncos 41-32.
  • CSUSM led for 26:41 while CPP held the lead for 12:26. 
  • The Broncos got 18 points off fast breaks while CSUSM only totaled eight. 
  • CPP held a slight edge in field-goal percentage, finishing with 40.7% to CSUSM's 37.9%. 
  • CSUSM turned over the ball 17 teams while CPP made only 11 turnovers in the contest.
  • Fuller collected his second consecutive double-double and seventh of the season.
  • CSUSM shot 100% (9-of-9) from the free-throw line in the first half and 77.8% (7-of-9) in the second half. In overtime, the Cougars went 0-for-2 at the charity stripe.
  • This was CSUSM's second overtime loss in as many games this season . The Cougars fell in triple overtime in their conference home opener to San Francisco State on Nov. 23. 
  • The Cougars are now 3-6 in the all-time series against the Broncos and 1-3 in The Sports Center.
