Cougars Split Doubleheader Against Sonoma State

SANTA ROSA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team split its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader against Sonoma State by earning a 4-2 win before taking a 10-7 loss on Friday afternoon at Sypher Field on the campus of Santa Rosa Junior College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Jack Pridy hit a two-run single with bases loaded and two outs.
  • Held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, CSUSM finally got on the board as Van Til hit an RBI single to right to score Jake Rico.
  • Right after Van Til's RBI single, Ott hit a two-run single of his own to score Diggs and Van Til and gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead.
  • With one out and a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth, Grant Buck put the Cougars up 4-2 with an RBI single into left.
  • Troy Lamparello earned his first save of the year with two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win for the Cougars.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM improved to 11-8 (7-6 CCAA) while SSU dropped to 4-9 (3-7 CCAA).
  • The victory gave the Cougars the all-time series lead at 6-5, and it was their second consecutive win over the Seawolves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Seawolves took an early 1-0 lead with a two-out homer by Zachary Guardino in the first inning.
  • Antonacci raised the ante with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to put CSUSM up 2-1.
  • An RBI double by Guardino knotted the game at 2-2.
  • The Cougars took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI singles by Johnson and Van Til.
  • The Seawolves went up 6-4 in the sixth with a two-run single by Matt Hill and a two-run homer by Dan Deely.
  • An RBI double by Joseph Bahna and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Garcia tied the game at 6-all in the top of the seventh.
  • SSU tallied another four-run inning to go up 10-6 with two RBI singles, a sacrifice fly and an RBI fielder's choice.
  • Van Til concluded the scoring for the Cougars as his RBI single to right in the eighth inning cut the deficit to 10-7.
