CSUSM Collects 9-4 Victory over MSUB, Falls 2-1 to Hawaii Hilo

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team began the Tournament of Champions with a 9-4 victory over Montana State Billings before dropping a 2-1 decision to Hawaii Hilo on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars went up 4-0 in the second on RBI singles by Silas and Andelin as well as a bases -oaded walk and a MSUB error.
  • MSUB cut its deficit to 4-3 on Madison Kelly's solo homer and a CSUSM error.
  • Wood led off the fifth with a double down the left field line and later scored on Britteny Scardina's single up the middle.
  • Raven LeClair pushed Vinyard, who was pinch running for Scardina, across the plate on a double down the left field line before touching home on Calderon's groundout to make it 7-3.
  • CSUSM spread out two more insurance runs in the next two innings on ground outs by Kammy Fisher and Andelin.
  • MSUB's Rylan Austin homered down the left field line to wrap up the scoring at 9-4.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Following the game, both teams had an overall record of 8-17.
  • Caitlin Vinyard got the win after tossing a complete game, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out four.
  • Taking the loss, Alyssa Etheridge gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits and struck out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Andelin led off the game with a double to left center and later scored on Wood's sacrifice fly to right to put CSUSM up 1-0.
  • Ellie Smith held UHH hitless until the bottom of the fifth inning but a 3-6 double play freed the bases.
  • Liilii hit a one-out RBI double to even the game before later scoring on a wild pitch.
 
QUICK HITS
  • The Cougars dropped to 8-18 overall while the Vulcan's improved to 22-11.
  • Smith took the loss despite throwing a three-hit complete game and not allowing an earned run.
  • Isabelle Mejia (8-1) collected the win after striking out five batters.
