Cougars Drop Series to No. 3/10 UCSD

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball closed out its series against No. 3/10 UC San Diego by taking losses of 16-4 and 19-1 on Sunday at CSUSM Baseball Field.
 
GAME 1: UCSD 16 - CSUSM 4

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UCSD went up 4-0 in the first with a leadoff home run by Shay Whitcomb and a three-run homer by Alex Athanacio.
  • Whitcomb tallied his second home run of the day in the top of the second inning to put the Tritons up 5-0.
  • The Cougars got on the board in the fourth as Danny Johnson drove in Bahna with an RBI single. After Andrew Cowell hit an RBI single to left to score Garcia, Näshéa Diggs hit a sacrifice fly to center to cut the deficit to 5-3.
  • In the fifth, UCSD went up 7-3 as Ryan McNally hit an RBI single up the middle before Whitcomb put a sac fly into left.
  • Athanacio struck again in the top of the sixth with his second three-run homer of the day.
  • Griffin Teisher put an RBI double down the left field line to score Van Til and cut the Tritons' lead to 10-4 in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Athanacio hit an RBI double down the left field line before scoring on a passed ball in the top of the seventh.
  • Another three-run homer, this time by Blake Baumgartner, put UCSD up 15-4 in the eighth.
  • The Tritons rounded out the scoring with an RBI single by Whitcomb in the ninth.
  • The Cougars' pitching staff walked 17 batters for the game.
 
QUICK HITS
  • UCSD improved to 16-4 (11-4 CCAA) while CSUSM dropped to 11-14 (7-12).
  • Triton reliever Ted Stuka (3-1) earned the win as he struck out four and allowed just one run on five hits in 4.2 innings.
  • Starter John Stevens (2-2) took the loss for the Cougars as he struck out two and allowed five runs on six hits and a walk in 1.1 innings.
  • Van Til improved his reached-base streak to 24 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A sacrifice fly to center by Buck scored Diggs and gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
  • The Tritons put up a seven-run inning in the top of the second with two home runs, an RBI double and an RBI single.
  • A sacrifice fly by Ryan McNally and a grand slam by Shay Whitcomb put the Tritons up 12-1 in the third.
  • Whitcomb posted his fourth home run of the afternoon in the fifth as the Tritons also scored on an RBI triple and a bases-loaded walk.
  • Up 15-1, UCSD ended the game by hitting an RBI double, a two-run single and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

  • CSUSM dropped to 11-15 (8-12 CCAA) while the Tritons moved to 17-4 (12-4 CCAA).
  • UCSD starter Brandon Weed (3-0) earned the win as he struck out three and allowed one run on two hits in five innings.
  • CSUSM starter Mason Corneliussen (0-2) took the loss as he struck out two and allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.
 
UP NEXT
CSUSM will head to Cal State Monterey Bay for a four-game series. The series will get underway on Friday at 2 p.m. in Seaside.
