Cougars Edged Out by No. 3/10 UCSD, 5-4

LA JOLLA, Calif. – In the second game of its four-game series against No. 3/10 UC San Diego, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team took a narrow 5-4 defeat in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at Triton Ballpark on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars struck first in the top of the second as Buck blasted a leadoff homer to right center for his fourth dinger of the season.
  • UCSD took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Aaron Kim hit a leadoff homer to left field before Stewart hit a sacrifice fly down the right field line with one out.
  • After Marcus Wilhite doubled with one out, Jake Rico hit an RBI double to right center and tied the game at 2-all in the top of the fifth.
  • Kim hit a sacrifice fly to right in the bottom of the fifth to plate Shay Whitcomb and gave the Tritons a 3-2 advantage.
  • CSUSM went up 4-3 in the top of the eighth on two RBI bunt singles by Van Til and Johnson.
  • UCSD pushed across the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. With a runner on second, Whitcomb hit an RBI double to right center before an RBI triple by Alex Eliopulos gave the Tritons a 5-4 lead.

  • CSUSM drops to 11-13 (7-11 CCAA) while UCSD improves to 15-4 (10-4 CCAA).
  • UCSD's Kyle Lucke (2-0) earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits and a walk in 2.1 innings of relief while striking out two.
  • Troy Lamparello (0-2) took the loss for the Cougars as he allowed two runs on four hits and walk in 1.1 innings while striking out two.
  • Van Til increased his reached-base streak to 22 consecutive games while tallying his team-leading 17th multi-hit game of the year.

The Cougars and Tritons will now head to San Marcos to finish up the four-game series with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday at CSUSM Baseball Field.
