Cougars Fall 7-3 at No. 3 UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team fell 7-3 to No. 3 UC San Diego in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Thursday night at Triton Ballpark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UCSD took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double to right center by Alex Athanacio and an RBI double to left center by Ryan McNally.
  • The Cougars knotted the game at 2-all in the top of the fifth. With runners in scoring position and no outs, Ott hit an RBI single through the right side before Buck delivered a deep sacrifice fly to center.
  • The Tritons retook the lead at 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth as they scored on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice fly to center and a two-run single through the left side while the Cougars committed three errors in the inning.
  • A sacrifice fly to left by Domenic Antonacci with one out in the top of the sixth scored Andrew Garcia and cut the deficit to 6-3.
  • UCSD once again went up by four runs in the bottom of the sixth as Shay Whitcomb hit an RBI double into right.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM drops to 11-12 (7-10 CCAA) while UCSD improves to 14-4 (9-4 CCAA).
  • UCSD starter Preston Mott (3-1) took the win with five strikeouts in five innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks.
  • Cougar starter Garrett Apker (2-2) took the loss after tossing four strikeouts in five innings while allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks.

The Cougars and Tritons will play their final game at Triton Ballpark on Friday at 6 p.m. The rest of the series will to shift to San Marcos on Sunday with a doubleheader set for noon at CSUSM Baseball Field.
