Cougars Drop 64-60 Decision at Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker at Cal Poly Pomona, falling 64-60 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars came out hot, taking a 12-4 lead in the first five minutes before finishing the quarter at 20-17.
  • The Broncos outscored CSUSM 20-8 in the second quarter to take a 37-28 advantage into halftime.
  • CSUSM shot 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the field in the third quarter while holding CPP to just 16.2 (3-of-16) to take a 48-44 lead into the final 10 minutes.
  • The Broncos put up another 20 points in the fourth quarter. 
  • The teams traded leads until a 3-pointer by Kasey Smit gave CPP a 54-52 lead with 5:24 remaining.
  • Forel made it a one-point game at 61-60 CPP on a second-chance layup with 21.2 seconds remaining.
  • The Broncos secured the win with three free throws in the final 10 seconds.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • The Cougars fall to 11-9 on the season and 8-8 in CCAA play while the Broncos move up to 19-3 overall and 15-2 conference action.
  • The series is now split between these two teams as CSUSM defeated CPP 70-68 on Dec. 19 at The Sport Center.
  • CSUSM committed 22 turnovers to CPP's six as the Broncos took advantage by scoring 13 points off turnovers.
  • The Cougars held a 44-39 advantage in rebounds, but CPP tallied 19 offensive boards to CSUSM's nine.
