Cougars Open CCAA Action with 73-62 Win at CSULA

LOS ANGELES – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team started its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season on a high note, recording a 73-62 victory at Cal State LA on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM held a 16-15 lead over the Golden Eagles after the first 10 minutes.
  • The Cougars outscored CSULA 20-13 in the second quarter to take a 36-28 lead into the break.
  • With 4:35 remaining in the third quarter, CSULA's Mackenzie Barnes recorded a layup to cut CSUSM's lead to six (40-34). The Cougars closed out the quarter with a 10-6 run to take a 50-40 advantage into the final 10 minutes.
  • A pair of free throws by Stephanie Custodio gave CSUSM its largest lead of the night at 71-53.
  • The Golden Eagles finished the game with an 8-2 run but CSUSM's lead was too large for a comeback as the Cougars registered the victory.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • The Cougars stay perfect at 2-0 (1-0 CCAA) while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-2 (0-1 CCAA) on the season.
  • CSUSM won each quarter, with their largest scoring difference coming in the second quarter at 20-13.
  • The Cougars shot 52.6% (30-of-57) from the field while Golden Eagles shot just 35.9% (23-of-64).
  • CSUSM struggled at the free-throw line, finishing the night at 52.9% (9-of-17).
  • The Golden Eagles got 26 points from their bench while CSUSM's contributed five points.
  • Thirty-two of CSUSM's 73 points came from inside the paint while 12 were from fast breaks.
