SAN MARCOS, Calif. – All fall sports will be in action for Cal State San Marcos Athletics this week.
 
Women's golf will get the week started at the DII National Preview in St. Albans, Missouri, on Monday and Tuesday.
 
Men's golf will be competing in the Sierra Central Wildcat Classic in Chico on Monday and Tuesday.
 
Women's and men's soccer will play their final two regular-season home games on Friday and Sunday against Stanislaus State and Chico State at The Cage. Friday's games against the Warriors will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. while Sunday's Senior Day contests against the Wildcats will get underway at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Prior to each game on Sunday, the Cougars will honor their seniors.
 
Volleyball will also host Stanislaus State and Chico State this weekend at The Sports Center. Friday's match against the Warriors will get underway at 7 p.m. while Saturday's contest against the Wildcats will begin at 3 p.m.
 
Men's and women's cross country will compete in their final races before the CCAA Championships by traveling up to Riverside for the UCR Highlander Invitational. The men's 8k will get underway at 8 a.m. and will be followed by the women's 6k at 8:45 a.m.

LAST OUTING

• CSUSM finished in 12th place at the RJGA South-Central Preview on Oct. 1 with a 39-over 903.
• Senior Justin Vrzich jumped up 23 spots to tie for 24th place after carding a 1-under 71 in the final round, finishing the tournament with a three-round 6-over 22 total.
• With that performance, Vrzich collected his first career CCAA Golfer of the Week honor.

SIERRA CENTRAL WILDCAT CLASSIC

• The tournament has had many different names throughout the years including Interwest Wildcat Classic, Wells Fargo Invitational and Coldwell Banker/DuFour Realty Invite.
• This marks the fourth Chico State tournament that CSUSM has competed in since the golf program began in 1999.
• The Cougars most recently placed eighth out of 11 teams in 2017.
• In 2015, CSUSM won the tournament by six strokes over host Chico State, and Dylan Healey was the individual medalist after firing a 5-under 211.
• CSUSM's first tournament in program history was the Chico State Coldwell Banker/Dufour Realty Invite in 1999. The Cougars placed fourth out of 10 teams and Dan Anderson was CSUSM's top golfer with a sixth-place finish after carding a 6-over 222.

LAST OUTING

• The Cougars captured their second consecutive tournament victory at the Dixie State Fall Invitational, topping Simon Fraser by two strokes after putting together a late surge in the final round.
• Senior Jaime Jacob moved up eight spots to take third with a 3-under 143 after carding a 3-under 69 on the last day.
• Jacob collected her second straight CCAA Golfer of the Week honor, her ninth career award, on Oct. 2.

 
DII NATIONAL PREVIEW

• The Cougars will be playing 36 holes on Monday before wrapping up the tournament on Tuesday with 18 holes. 
• This marks the first time a CSUSM women's golf team will compete in Missouri.
• The Cougars will be playing on the same course that the NCAA Division II National Championships will be played on May 12-16.
• Lindenwood is the host of both the DII National Preview and the NCAA Division II National Championships.

THE HUTTON FILE

• Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
• The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
• Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019.
• In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged member of the NCAA Division II in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.

• Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his sixth year in charge of the women's program and 14th overall at CSUSM

• The Warriors have allowed at least two goals in all six CCAA games this season.
• Stan State is only getting 2.82 shots on goal per game – last in the CCAA and 207th nationally.

PREVIOUS WEEK

• The Cougars went 2-1 this past week with sweeps over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona. Their only loss was to No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino, who they took to four sets on Friday.
• CSUSM is the first team to take the opening set from top-ranked CSUSB this season. The Coyotes have only lost five sets in 2019.
• In Saturday's sweep at CPP, the Cougars hit a season-best .330. Their previous-best outing was also against the Broncos as they hit .306 on Sept. 28 in The Sports Center.
• For the first time since joining the CCAA, the Cougars went an entire set without making a hitting error, which they achieved during the second set at CPP.
• As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM moved up to second in digs per set (15.68) and third in blocks per set (2.22). Its blocks per set average ranks 37th among NCAA Division II teams.
• Maddy Newcombe is the CCAA leader with 27 aces while ranked fourth in total blocks with 58.  
• Grecia Cordero-Barr continues to lead the CCAA in digs (284) and digs per set (4.81).
• In the CCAA standings, CSUSM is tied for third with UC San Diego in the South Division.

ALL STANISLAUS STATE ON FRIDAY

• The Warriors' 6-2 conference record is entirely against North Division teams. Friday's match against the Cougars is their first one against a South Division team this season.
• Stan State's two losses were sweeps against Chico State and San Francisco State.
• The Warriors enter Friday's match on a five-match win streak.
• CSUSM is 3-2 in the all-time series against Stan State and is 2-0 when playing in San Marcos.
• Stan State ranks fifth in kills per set at 13.14 in the CCAA, but the Warriors struggle in serving with only 1.52 per set, which ranks them 11th.
• Stan State's Jordan Wilson is ranked fifth in the CCAA with 56 blocks while Kiara Erving is in sixth with 54 total blocks.

CHICO VISITS THE SPORTS CENTER ON SATURDAY

• Like Stan State, the Wildcats will face their first South Division opponent this week when they face UC San Diego on Friday night.
• Chico State's two losses were a five-set heartbreaker at San Francisco State and a four-set decision against Sonoma State.
• The Wildcats have won back-to-back four-set matches against Humboldt State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
• The all-time series is tied 3-3 between the Cougars and Wildcats. In the Sports Center, CSUSM evened the series at 1-1 in 2017 with a four-set victory.
• Chico State is ranked second in the conference in kills per set (13.56) with Kim Wright leading the way with a 3.61 kills per set average, which ranks her second in CCAA.
• Chico State was picked to finish tied for fifth in the North Division of the 2019 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE LEONARD FILE

• Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her ninth season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
• Leonard has a 171-112 (.604) record as CSUSM's head coach.
• In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 263-238 (.525) career record. 
• Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings in the 2017 season.

• Joshua Litwiller led the men's team to a seventh-place finish at the Lewis Crossover after clocking in with a time of 25:26.3 and landing the seventh-place slot.
• Trevor Boaz finished the Triton Classic in 33rd with a time of 27:39.90 as the Cougars finished in fifth out of five teams.
• Jax Heckers was the first Cougar to cross the finish line for the women's team at the Lewis Crossover as the team earned a 10th-place finish out of 36 teams. 
• Erin MacNeil led the charge for CSUSM at the UCSD Triton Classic as they placed sixth out of six teams. 

UPCOMING RACE

• This will be the third time the Cougars are competing in the UCR Highlander Invitational since becoming a member of the CCAA.
• In 2017, the women's team finished sixth out of 30 teams while the men placed 15th out of 33 teams.
• The men's squad is ranked No. 18 nationally and No. 3 regionally while the women are receiving votes in the national rankings and are ranked No. 9 in the region, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). 

THE OLSON FILE

• Head coach Torrey Olson begins his second season at the helm of the men's and women's cross country after taking over in the summer of 2018.
• Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
• Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
• In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
• A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
