TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader at Stanislaus State, coming from behind for a 3-2 win in game one before falling 16-4 in the nightcap.
Senior
Aidan Stinnett and junior
Cabot Van Til each tallied three hits on the day. Junior
Mike Lopez (3-2) picked up the win after going seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and fanning six. Freshman
Garrett Apker collected the save after a flawless ninth inning.
The Cougars will conclude their four-game series with the Warriors on Monday, April 9 at 11 a.m.
GAME 1: CSUSM 3 – Stan State 2
Trailing by a run in the eighth, Stinnett crushed a 2-RBI single up the middle to drive in Van Til and junior
Adam Tanoue who both hit singles to begin the frame.
The Warriors struck first in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on Vinny Margiotta's two-out double down the left line.
CSUSM evened the game in the top of the seventh on back-to-back doubles by juniors
Isaias Torres and
Domenic Antonacci.
Stan State wasted no time retaking the lead in the bottom of the frame with Jack Large's RBI double to right field.
GAME 2: Stan State 16 – CSUSM 4
Stinnett's two-run homer in the opening frame put CSUSM up 2-0. It was his second of the season.
Van Til led off the third inning with a double to right field and later scored on junior
Austin Ott's single through the right side.
In the bottom of the frame, the Warriors' offense exploded by recording 13 runs on 12 hits and a Cougar error.
CSUSM's final run came in the top of the fourth on sophomore
Jose Osete's RBI single, scoring Antonacci after he reached on a hit up the middle.
Stan State would add three more runs in the final two innings.
