Cougars Drop Heartbreaker in Turlock

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team dropped a 5-4 10-inning heartbreaker in its series opener at Stanislaus State on Saturday night at Warrior Baseball Field.
 
Senior Tyler Place went 3-for-4 and hit his sixth home run of the season. Senior Aidan Stinnett also collected three hits including a double in the game.
 
Place's home run to right center came in the first inning. Stinnett followed with a double through the left side and later scored on a Stan State error to give CSUSM a 2-0 lead.
 
The Warriors evened the game on Michael Wyatt's 2-RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the third.
 
Stan State took its first lead of the contest in the bottom of the sixth on a 2-RBI double by Ethan Utler.
 
CSUSM tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth. Junior Isaias Torres drew a bases-loaded walk to push a run across with the tying run coming on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Griffin Teisher.
 
The Warriors drew back-to-back walks to begin the 10th and later scored on two consecutive bunts to earn the win.
 
Junior Taylor Greene got a no-decision after going 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits and struck out six. Freshman Garrett Apker took the loss after starting the 10th and walking the first two batters.
 
Stan State's Cody Kruip earned the win after pitching a shutout 10th inning. Braeden Oki went 4-for-5 with a run.
 
The Cougars will face Stan State in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 8 with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
