WALNUT CREEK – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team had four Cougars named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) team, announced by the conference office on Thursday. Senior
Ethan Alvano was tabbed CCAA Player of the Year and joined classmate
Josh Spiers on the first team. Fellow seniors
Joe Boyd and
Brian Wright earned All-CCAA second team and honorable mention honors, respectively.
Alvano, a guard from Corona, was selected Newcomer of the Year a season ago and was even better in his final campaign. Alvano led the CCAA in points (20.5), assists (5.9) and steals per game (2.6). His 76 total steals are sixth best in the nation. Alvano was named CCAA Player of the Week three times this season and a total of five times in his two years as a Cougar. He became the first Cougar hit the 1,000-point plateau men's basketball program history and is the CSUSM all-time scoring leader. Alvano also set a new scoring record with 42 points against Concordia Irvine on Nov. 11.
Spiers, a forward from Townsville, Aus. was fifth in the conference in scoring with 15.2 points per game. His 3-pointers per game average of 2.9 was second-best in the CCAA. Spiers scored a season-high 30 points in a 93-64 win over San Diego Christian on Nov. 25, 2017.
Boyd, a forward from Scottsdale, Ariz. averaged 11.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for the season. He recorded a team-best nine double-doubles. Boyd scored a season-high 24 points in addition to his 13 rebounds against rival UC San Diego on Jan. 23. He tallied a team-high 55.7 field goal percentage in his 29 games.
Wright, a guard from Carson, scored 9.9 points in 31.5 minutes while grabbing 4.0 rebounds per game. He finished second on the team in assists per game (3.0) and tied for second in steals (25). Wright scored a season-best 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting against Humboldt State on Jan 6.
