Cougars Fall in CCAA Opener at Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team fell 5-1 to Cal Poly Pomona in its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener on Friday afternoon at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
 
The loss snaps CSUSM's five-game winning streak as the Cougars drop to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in CCAA action. The Broncos improve to 4-3, 1-0 CCAA following the win.
 
The Cougars managed just six hits for the game. Junior Cabot Van Til went 2-for-4 while freshman Joseph Bahna finished 1-for-2 and the teams only RBI.
 
After a scoreless first inning, CPP got the scoring started in a big way. The Broncos would strike for four runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning before adding one more run in the bottom of the third following a bases loaded walk to give CPP a 5-0 lead.
 
The Cougars would eventually get on the board with their only run of the game following a one-out single from junior Marcus Wilhite who later came around to score on a Bahna RBI single in the top of the seventh.
 
Freshman Michael Lopez pitched 4.1 innings out of the bullpen for CSUSM, giving up four hits and no runs while striking out three.
 
Four CPP players finished with multi-hit games while starting pitcher Austin Isenhart (2-0) earned the win after going 7.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits while striking out five and walking two.
 
CSUSM's Mike Lopez (1-1) is handed the loss after lasting 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.
 
CSUSM was outhit 11-6 for the game.
 
The Cougars and Broncos are right back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 24 in Pomona for game two of a four-game split-venue series. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
