CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team concluded its 2018 road schedule on Saturday at Chico State, falling 74-56 to the Wildcats in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action.
CSUSM shot only 32.8 percent (22-of-67) from the field while Chico State finished at 50.0 (26-of-52) percent including a 52.4 performance shooting percentage (11-of-21) from beyond the arc.
The Cougars drop to 7-17 overall and 7-13 in conference play. The Wildcats improve to 14-10, 12-8 CCAA.
Senior
Raegan Lillie tallied a team-high 13 points and junior
Juliet Jones chipped in 11 points. Senior
Lupe Cruz finished with six points and six rebounds while classmate
Kaitlyn Reina added six points and three steals.
CSUSM trailed 37-28 at the break but made it a two-point game (51-49) on a Jones 3-pointer at the 3:47 minute mark in the third quarter. The Wildcats closed out the quarter with a 5-0 run to take a 56-49 lead into the final 10 minutes.
A layup by Cruz cut the Wildcat lead to 58-54 with 8:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. Chico State responded with an 11-2 run to clinch the win at 74-56.
Whitney Branham led Chico State's offense with 21 points while recording seven rebounds and five assists.
The Cougars return home for their final homestand of 2018, hosting Cal State L.A. on Thursday, Feb. 22 and Cal State Dominguez on Saturday, Feb. 24. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.
