Cougars Hold Off CPP Comeback for 70-68 Win

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team held on to a 70-68 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory over visiting Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday afternoon at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars took a 36-23 lead into the halftime break.
  • Hackson recorded three of her five 3-pointers in the opening half.
  • The Cougars held the Broncos, the No. 1 team in the conference in field-goal percentage, to just 25.8 percent in the first 20 minutes.
  • The Cougars went on a 5-0 run capped by freshman Dynnah Buckner's jumper at the 5:10 mark in the fourth quarter after the Broncos cut CSUSM's lead to 56-50.
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers by CPP's Jordyn Shane with a Hackson free throw in between cut the game to 68-65 with 18 seconds remaining.
  • Forel made the backend of her two free throws before CPP's Mylah Andrada threw up a 3-pointer from her hip to make it a 1-point game (69-68).
 
FAST BREAKS
  • The Cougars improve to 6-3 overall (3-2 CCAA) while handing the Broncos (7-2, 3-1 CCAA) their first conference loss.  
  • CSUSM's 18 assists were the highest against a conference opponent this season and were the second highest overall after recording 22 at Concordia Irvine on Nov. 15.
  • The Cougar defense held CPP, the No. 1 team in field-goal percentage in the CCAA, to just 31.7 percent. The Broncos entered the game with a 43.9 field-goal percentage.
  • Forel nabbed her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
  • The Cougars shot only 36.7 percent from the free throw line, their lowest of the season, while the Broncos went 23-of-29 (79.3 percent).
  • Shane tallied a game-high 27 points for the Broncos.
