SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Women's golf's Jaime Jacob and men's cross country's Shea Vavra have been named the Cal State San Marcos Student-Athletes of the Month presented by The Quad for October 2018.
 
The CSUSM Student-Athletes of the Month awards are determined through a vote of all Department of Athletics coaches, administrators and staff. Each in-season program nominates a student-athlete to be considered for the award each month.
 
Jacob ended her fall season on a strong note by winning the CSUSM Fall Classic. The junior broke program records for the lowest round at 6-under 66 and the lowest 36-hole total at 9-under 135. This helped the Cougars capture the CSUSM Fall Classic title for the third consecutive season with a program-low 7-under 569 and top the nearest competitor by 34 strokes. Jacob's performance moved her up to No. 13 in the NCAA Division II rankings. To top it all off, Jacob was named the CCAA Golfer of the Week for the second consecutive week.
 
Vavra was the Cougars' top runner at the Lewis Conference Crossover on Oct. 6. in Romeoville, Illinois. Out of 282 runners, the redshirt sophomore finished 19th with a time of 25:16.4 in the 8-kilometer race – just 12.2 seconds off his personal best. For his performance, the Escondido native was named the CCAA Runner of the Week for the first time.
 
With women's golf's fall season complete, Jacob and the rest of the Cougars will return to action at the PLNU Sea Lions Invite on Feb. 4-5 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Vavra and the men's cross country team will compete at the CCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 9 a.m. on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino.
