This Week in Cougar Athletics: Oct. 22-28

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Seven road contests await Cal State San Marcos Athletics as men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer and volleyball are all away from San Marcos this week.

Women's golf will travel to the Skyhawk Women's Fall Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Monday, Oct. 22 and Tuesday, Oct. 23 while the men's team travels to Seaside, California, for the CSUMB Otter Invitational on the same days. Men's and women's soccer will visit Chico State on Thursday, Oct. 25 before heading to Stanislaus State to wrap up the 2018 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27. Volleyball's lone match of the week will take place on Saturday, Oct. 27 as the Cougars head to down to La Jolla to face rival UC San Diego.

LAST TOURNAMENT
  • The Cougars defended its Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate title on Tuesday, Sept. 25, winning the tournament by five strokes.
  • Senior Sarah Garcia and junior Jaime Jacob went 1-2 to lead the Cougars.
  • Garcia had a clean sheet with four birdies and 14 pars for a 4-under 68 in the final round to finish with a 4-under 140.
  • Garcia was CCAA Golfer of the Week (Sept. 19-25) after winning CSUSM's first individual title of 2018-19 season.

THIS SEASON
  • The Cougars finished 8th in the Western Washington Invitational on Sept. 25.
  • McBrayer was CSUSM's top finisher, tying for 21st with a 5-over 221.
 
THE HUTTON FILE
  • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
  • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018.
  • Both teams qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships last season.

PREVIOUS WEEK
  • The Cougars clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season with a 3-2 win over Cal State L.A. on Sunday.
  • The Cougars tied 0-0 with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday.
  • CSUSM is currently fifth in the CCAA standings with 20 points.
  • Seniors Amy Wilson, Elizabeth Maass, Caitlin Gharibeh, Jessica Moreno and Jenna Hernandez were honored prior to Sunday's game.

SCOUTING CHICO STATE
  • The Wildcats are currently tied with San Francisco State for second in the CCAA standings with 23 points.
  • This past week, Chico came to a 1-1 draw at Stanislaus State before dropping a 2-1 decision at San Francisco State on Sunday.
  • This will mark the Cougars' first visit to Chico since 2015 where it fell 1-0.
  • CSUSM has won the past two regular-season meetings with Chico – both of which were in San Marcos.
  • The Cougars and Wildcats officially tied 0-0 in the opening round of the 2017 CCAA Tournament, but CSUSM moved on to the semifinals after winning the shootout 5-4.
  • CSUSM is 2-1-1 in the all-time series against Chico but is 0-1 when playing in Chico.
  • The Wildcats' scoring average ranks fourth in the league (1.286), and they're allowing the third-fewest goals per game (0.64).
  • Chico has not lost a game at home this season as its record stands at 3-0-4 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play.

REGULAR-SEASON FINALE AT STANISLAUS STATE
  • The regular season will conclude on Saturday as the Cougars make their way to Turlock to face Stanislaus State.
  • The Warriors are currently tied for eighth with Cal State Monterey Bay at 11 points and are mathematically still in the hunt for a postseason bid.
  • Stanislaus tied 1-1 with Chico State last Wednesday before falling 1-0 at San Francisco State on Friday.
  • The Cougars are 1-2-1 in the all-time series with the Warriors and are 0-1 when playing in Turlock.
  • CSUSM earned its first-ever victory against Stanislaus last season at home.
  • The Warriors are scoring the second-most goals per game in the CCAA this season at 1.5, but they're allowing the fourth-most goals per game at 1.13.

THE RENNEISEN FILE
  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his fifth year in charge of the women's program and 13th overall at CSUSM
  • Renneisen's 2017 squad was the first CSUSM team sport to compete in the CCAA postseason.
  • Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
  • As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 35-26-21 (.555) for his career with the Cougars.

THE PULVERS FILE
  • This season marks the 13th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
  • He notched his 100th win as the men's head coach on Oct. 7, 2016 in a road victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In 22 seasons as a collegiate head men's soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 236-155-37 (.595) career record. He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women's program.
  • From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men's and women's soccer teams.

  • The Cougars recorded back-to-back sweeps at home against Sonoma State (25-13, 25-15, 25-10) and Humboldt State (25-14, 25-16, 25-17) last weekend.
  • Prior to Saturday's match, CSUSM honored its five seniors – Faith Fortuné, Ashley Pedersen, Courtney Hulla, Haley Montgomery and Lauren Lee – who played their final match in The Sports Center.
  • With the wins, CSUSM holds a two-match lead over UCSD entering their final three matches of the season.

UC SAN DIEGO UPDATE
  • The Tritons are next-to-last in the CCAA South Division standings with a 5-9 CCAA record and a 9-11 overall record.
  • Like CSUSM, the Tritons won both of their matches last weekend against SSU and HSU. But unlike the Cougars, it took four sets for UCSD to defeat SSU.
  • CSUSM has won the last two times these teams have faced each other including a four-set victory (25-20, 24-26, 25-13, 25-15) in The Sports Center on Sept. 8.
 
THE LEONARD FILE
  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eighth season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings last season.
