Cougars Win Back-to-Back in CCAA Home-Opening Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team put together a balanced offense to clinch a five-set victory over Stanislaus State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match on Saturday night in The Sports Center. Final scores were 25-15, 22-25, 23-25, 25-13 and 15-12.

Six different Cougars notched six or more kills with sophomore Maddy Newcombe leading the way with 10 kills on 24 attempts and no errors for a .417 clip.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 5-6 on the year and 2-1 in the CCAA. The Warriors (0-12, 0-4 CCAA) are still looking for their first win of 2017.

Sophomore setter Aleese Wheaton earned a career-best 25 digs en route to a double-double after dishing out 27 assists.  Freshman libero Grecia Cordero-Barr tallied 21 digs and junior Haley Montgomery added 18 digs.

The Cougars came out on fire with a .353 attack percentage in the opening set, making only two hitting errors to clinch a 25-15 win.

CSUSM hit below .100 in the second and third sets which the Warriors took advantage of to take a 2-1 lead in the match with 25-22 and 25-23 set victories.

In the fourth set, the Cougars offense came back tenfold with a .406 clip after making only one error.

Both teams traded leads in the fifth set with neither team taking a larger lead than one point until a block by juniors Lauren Lee and Faith Fortuné gave CSUSM an 11-9 advantage. The Cougars clinched the set and match victory on a Newcombe-Lee block to make it 15-12.

Rachel Klopfer led the Warrior offense with 18 kills while Seirra Adam chipped in 11 kills.

The Cougars hit the road next week, making stops at Cal Poly Pomona and No. 22 Cal State San Bernardino.
