CSUSM Closes out 2017 Campaign Against CSULA

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team wraps up its 2017 season this week, facing Cal State L.A. in a split-venue series with two games in Los Angeles on Thursday and Friday before returning on Saturday for a Senior Day doubleheader beginning at noon.

SENIOR DAY  
THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
  • The Cougars took the series opener, 7-3, from Cal State San Bernardino last Friday. CSUSM dropped the remaining three games by scores of 14-7, 8-4 and 9-6.
  • Freshman Riley Froom went 4-for-6 with two RBIs, a double and a triple.  
 
CSUSM RANKS IN CCAA STATISTICS
  • The Cougars fell to fourth in the CCAA statistics with a .296 batting average (440-for-1484). Chico State moved into a tie with Cal Poly Pomona for the No. 1 spot with a .314 clip. UC San Diego slipped past CSUSM to secure third with a .300 average.  
  • Junior shortstop Tyler Place is the CCAA doubles leader with 18 while the team dropped to second with 90 doubles, one shy of first place Cal State L.A.
  • The Cougars are second in the CCAA with 61 batters being hit by a pitch, 17 less than Chico State. 
 
CAL STATE L.A. BREAKDOWN
  • The all-time series between CSUSM and CSULA is tied at 4-4.    
  • The Golden Eagles took 3-of-4 from UC San Diego last week, dropping the series opener, 9-3, before snagging the final three games by scores of 8-7, 9-4 and 2-1.  
  • CSULA ranks sixth in the nation in double plays per game (1.02) and eighth with 45 double plays converted in 2017.
  • The Golden Eagles have already secured a spot in the CCAA Tournament and will finish third in the conference standings. 
  • In the CCAA Preseason Poll, CSULA was picked to fourth third in the South Division. 
 
AHEARN EARNS CSUSM'S FIRST WEST REGION WEEKLY HONOR
  • Ahearn snagged CSUSM's first NCAA Division II West Region weekly honor in school history after being named NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 13-19.
  • The senior ace also got CCAA Pitcher of the Week, CSUSM's second conference honor after sophomore Isaias Torres collected CCAA Player of the Week for Feb. 13-19.
  • Ahearn was named a San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month for February.
 
CSUSM MADE 1ST APPEARANCE IN TOP 10 NCBWA WEST REGION
  • The Cougars made their National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) West Region debut in the second week of the season, earning a No. 6 ranking.
  • In week two of 2016, CSUSM received votes after compiling an 8-4 record.
 
TORRES EARNS CCAA WEEKLY HONOR
  • Sophomore catcher Isaias Torres was named CCAA Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 13-20. He started all four games behind the plate and hit .500 (7-for-14) with eight RBIs, seven hits, two runs and a .714 slugging percentage. Torres had three doubles, a sacrifice fly and handled 22 putouts in the series.
  • This was CSUSM's first conference weekly honor in program history.
 
NCBWA 2017 PRESEASON HONORS
  • The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) selected junior shortstop Tyler Place to the first team.
  • This marks the first time in program history a player has received a NCAA Division Regional honor.
 
THE GUILIANO FILE
  • Head coach Matt Guiliano became CSUSM's second coach in program history this past summer.
  • Guiliano spent nine seasons as the University of Sioux Falls Head Baseball Coach where he accumulated a 175-236-1 (.426) record.
  • A graduate of USF, Guiliano remains in the Top 5 of several career and single season statistics including third in the all-time career batting average (.452) and first in triples (10).
  • Guiliano began his college career at Palomar College, leading the Comets to Pacific Coast Conference Championships, a No. 4 ranking in California and No. 7 ranking in the nation.
  • A Valley Center High School graduate, Guiliano led the Jaguars to back-to-back Valley League Championships and runner-up finishes in the CIF finals in 2000 and 2001.
 
THE CCAA CONFERENCE
  • Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Conference, made up of 12 Cal State institutions and UC San Diego.
  • The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
