LA JOLLA, Calif. – On a day of stellar performances by the Cal State San Marcos men's track & field team, senior
Justin Washington recorded one of the top marks in program history to guide the Cougars to sixth at the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego on Saturday.
The Cougars scored 22.5 points to claim sixth, 11.5 points behind Concordia (Ore.). UC San Diego picked up the victory with 103 points.
Washington ran the second-fastest 800m in Cougar history, finishing fourth overall with a personal best time of 1:51.34. The mark is also the second-fastest in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) this season and is an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier. However, as Candidacy Year Three members of NCAA Division II, the Cougars are not eligible to compete at national championships this season.
The 4x400m relay of sophomore
Nathan Hale, Jr., Washington, senior
Aaron Hickman and freshman
Brian Wright finished second with a season best time of 3:21.15. Wright put on a show in his first-ever 400m, running the anchor leg with a 50.5 split.
In the field events, senior
Josh Maffei qualified for the CCAA Championships in the hammer with a personal best throw of 42.08m. Maffei is now qualified in a team-leading four events, having previously achieved the standards in the discus, shot put and javelin.
The freshman jumpers also had a great showing this afternoon.
Nick Heid matched his personal best in the high jump with a clearance of 1.91m to place eighth, while
Nick Samuels (13.39m) and
Antonio Riggins (13.05m) finished seventh and ninth, respectively, in the triple jump.
The Cougars will compete in their regular-season finale at the adidas/
Steve Scott Invitational April 28-29 at UC Irvine. The event is named in honor of CSUSM track & field head coach and UC Irvine alumnus
Steve Scott, who was a six-time All-American in cross country and track & field for the Anteaters.
