SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos softball team will take a break from California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, facing a pair of PacWest Conference opponents this week. The Cougars will host No. 25 California Baptist on Friday, March 31 at 1 p.m. and travel to Concordia University Irvine on Saturday, April 1 at noon.

THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE

• CSUSM was swept in a four-game series by Cal State Monterey Bay last week. The Cougars fell by scores of 3-0, 9-1 (5 inn.), 8-0 (5 inn.) and 4-0. 
• Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Alvarez has the fifth best ERA in the CCAA at 1.59. 
• Freshman infielder Gabriela Arizaga is currently fourth in the CCAA in batting average at .413. 

CALIFORNIA BAPTIST BREAKDOWN

• California Baptist is first in the PacWest with an 18-2 conference record. The Lancers are 24-7 overall. 
• Ciara Stapp and Kellye Springstead lead the CBU pitching staff with ERAs of 1.61 and 1.73, respectively. 
• Caitlyn Lloyd is the Lancers' top hitter with a .429 batting average to go with 26 runs, 30 RBI and six home runs. 
• Head coach Bill Barber is in his sixth season. 

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY IRVINE BREAKDOWN

• Concordia is third in the PacWest with a 12-4 conference record. The Eagles are 24-9-2 overall. 
• CUI's top hitter is Mackenzie Graham who sports a .400 batting average. 
• Grayson Harvey is the Eagles' ace with a 1.74 ERA to go with 96 strikeouts. 
• Crystal Rosenthal is in her ninth year as head coach of CUI.

ARIZAGA NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• Freshman infielder Gabriela Arizaga was named the CCAA Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 27 - March 5. 
• She went 8-for-15 with five RBI, five runs, three doubles and a home run as the Cougars took three of four games from Cal State East Bay
• Arizaga went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI as the Cougars won game two, 4-1.
• In game three, she went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI and a home run as CSUSM defeated the Pioneers, 8-7, in nine innings. 

COACH NEVAREZ

• Head coach Laurie Nevarez is in her fourth season at the helm of the Cougars in 2017.
• Hired in 2014, Nevarez put together an 83-61-1 (.576) record in her first three years.
• Over her 13-year, head-coaching career, Nevarez has put together a 402-177-2 (.694) overall record. Prior to her time at CSUSM, Nevarez coached NCAA Division III Redlands for 10 seasons.

THE CCAA

• Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), made up of 12 Cal State institutions and UC San Diego.
• The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
