SAN DIEGO – Senior
Josh Maffei broke his program shot put record and senior
Justin Washington and sophomore
Joe Gonzalez collected event victories for the Cal State San Marcos men's track & field team in the open divisions of the Aztec Invitational at San Diego State on Friday.
Maffei threw 13.92m to break his own school shot put record; the second meet in a row in which he achieved the feat. In all, Maffei has set the record three times over the five meets this season. Today's throw was the sixth-longest in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) this year, bested last week's mark by 0.29-meters and was good for a 12th-place result.
Washington won the 800m with a time of 1:54.51 after finishing runner-up at the Aztec Invitational two straight years. It is Washington's second 800m win of the season and his fourth in the event as a Cougar.
Gonzalez picked up his first collegiate victory on the 3000m with a personal best mark of 8:39.29. The time improved upon his previous best by 10.42 seconds. In all, five Cougars finished in the top eight in the 3000m, with sophomore
Steven Terris (8:44.17) placing third and freshmen
Joshua Litwiller (8:44.84),
Kevin Lehr (9:01.11) and
Phillip Dorado (9:07.50) running personal bests to finish fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively.
Freshman
Shea Vavra continued his strong season, finishing second in the 1500m with a personal best time of 3:58.19.
Sophomore
Nathan Hale, Jr. qualified for his second event in the CCAA Championships, hitting the standard in the 400m with a personal best of 50.62 to place ninth.
Sophomore
Bryce Johnson picked up a fifth-place result in the 110H with a mark of 15.31.
In the triple jump, freshman
Nick Samuels finished fourth with a mark of 12.97m and fellow freshman
Antonio Riggins leaped 12.94m to finish fifth.
Tim Stalboerger, another Cougar freshman improving every week, recorded a javelin personal best of 47.98m to place ninth overall.
The Cougars will be in La Jolla next week for the California Collegiate Invitational, hosted by CCAA rival UC San Diego.
