SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Four student-athletes from the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team earned All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) honors, announced Thursday at the banquet for the CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament. Senior guard Tyson Kygar and junior guard Josh Spiers got honorable mention recognition. Junior forward Joe Boyd was placed on the second team, while junior guard Ethan Alvano was recognized as a first team selection. Additionally, Alvano was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year.
Alvano led the Cougars and the conference in points and assists averaging 17.9 and 5.6 per game, respectively. He was first on the team and second in the CCAA in steals at 2.2 per game. His 17.9 points per game broke the single-season scoring average, set by Darnell Taylor with 17.7 last year. Alvano also owns CSUSM's single-game scoring record with 36 points in a 109-108 double overtime win at Cal State East Bay on Jan. 5. He was named the CCAA Player of the Week twice during the season. Once for the week of Jan. 2-8 and another for the week of Feb. 6-12.
Boyd topped the team and the conference with 10.0 rebounds per game to go along with 13.8 points per game. He finished the season with 13 double-doubles. Boyd compiled 23 points, on 10-of-11 shooting, and 12 rebounds in a 93-68 win against Redlands on Nov. 15. His 10.0 rebounds per game set a new school record for single-season rebounding average, breaking Declan Daly's 9.2 mark set last season.
Spiers and Kygar were arguably the two best shooters in the CCAA this season. Spiers averaged 13.5 points per game, shooting 48.8 percent (79-162) from behind the arc. He led the conference in three-point percentage and was second in 3-pointers made. Kygar averaged 11.3 points per game, shooting 46.8 percent (81-173) from three-point range. He topped the conference in made 3-pointers and was second in three-point percentage.
The Cougars finished the season at 18-10 overall, a three-game improvement in the wins column from last season. CSUSM went 12-8 in CCAA play, good for fifth place in the conference. The Cougars would have made the CCAA Tournament if postseason eligible. CSUSM went 11-9 in conference play last season.
