SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team will begin California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play this week. The Cougars will travel to local rival UC San Diego for a four-game series. The series begins on Friday, Feb. 10 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 11 with another doubleheader starting at noon.

THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
- CSUSM fell to Vanguard in the season opener by a final score of 5-0. The Cougars could only muster two hits in the contest, one each by senior Holly Fauria and junior Lindsay Cerulle.
- CSUSM suffered a doubleheader sweep against San Diego Christian. The Cougars dropped an 8-3 decision in game one and were defeated by one run (4-3) in game two.
UC SAN DIEGO BREAKDOWN
- UC San Diego is currently 4-0.
- Caitlyn Wesiner is the Tritons' best hitter with a .778 (7-for-9) batting average. Four other UCSD players currently hit .500 or better.
- The Triton pitching staff has a 2.69 ERA with 15 strikeouts in four games.
- Head coach Patti Gerckens is in her 25th year at the helm.
COACH NEVAREZ
- Head coach Laurie Nevarez is in her fourth season at the helm of the Cougars in 2017.
- Hired in 2014, Nevarez put together an 83-61-1 (.576) record in her first three years.
- Over her 13-year, head-coaching career, Nevarez has put together a 402-177-2 (.694) overall record. Prior to her time at CSUSM, Nevarez coached NCAA Division III Redlands for 10 seasons.
THE CCAA
- Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), made up of 12 Cal State institutions and UC San Diego.
- The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
