Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team suffered its first shutout of the 2017 season at the hands of No. 24 UC San Diego, 8-0, on Thursday night at Triton Ballpark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season opener.
The Cougars fall to 10-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action. The Tritons move up to 9-2 on the season and 1-0 in CCAA play.
Freshman
Griffin Teisher had a 2-for-2 night with a triple. Senior left fielder
Ross Lemmel and sophomore
Isaias Torres also tallied two hits in the contest.
Junior
Shawn Hunt (0-1) recorded the loss after going three innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits. Sophomore
Marc Vela pitched four shutout innings in relief, relinquishing only one hit.
UCSD posted a pair of runs in both the first and second innings before pushing three runs across in the third inning. The Tritons final run was scored in the eighth inning.
The Cougars loaded the bases in the third inning, but UCSD got out of the jam with a 6-4-3 double play.
CSUSM's other chance came when Teisher crushed a two-out triple to the right field corner, but was stranded on base in the top of the seventh.
UCSD's Brandon Shirley went 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run.
The Cougars return to Triton Ballpark tomorrow night at 6 p.m. for the second match-up in the four-game series with UC San Diego.
