THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
- CSUSM earned its first win of the season against Cal State San Bernardino. Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Alvarez threw a complete game and did not give up an earned run as the Cougars won 3-1 in game one. CSUSM could not recover from a CSUSB grand slam in the first inning and fell in game two, 6-4.
AZUSA PACIFIC BREAKDOWN
- Azusa Pacific is 7-4 overall. APU recently split a doubleheader against No. 7 Adelphi. APU fell in game one 6-5 in nine innings and won the second game 8-0 in five innings.
- Kayla Jimenez, Abry Moreno and Nicki Sprague bat .405, .382 and .316, respectively. Sprague and Moreno have three and two homers, respectively, on the season.
- Carly Xepoleas is APU's ace with a 1.30 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 32.1 innings of work.
- Head coach Carrie Webber is in her 10th year as head coach.
COACH NEVAREZ
- Head coach Laurie Nevarez is in her fourth season at the helm of the Cougars in 2017.
- Hired in 2014, Nevarez put together an 83-61-1 (.576) record in her first three years.
- Over her 13-year, head-coaching career, Nevarez has put together a 402-177-2 (.694) overall record. Prior to her time at CSUSM, Nevarez coached NCAA Division III Redlands for 10 seasons.
THE CCAA
- Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), made up of 12 Cal State institutions and UC San Diego.
- The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
