CSUSM Wraps Up Season on Road at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team concludes its 2016-17 season on the road, traveling to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday.

THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
  • CSUSM went 1-1 last week.  
  • The Cougars scored a season-high 86 points to defeat Cal State Monterey Bay last Thursday with the Otters putting up 63 points. CSUSM shot a season-best 66.6 percent from the field as freshman guard Brianna Porter led the Cougars with 19 points.
  •  A slow start doomed the Cougars as they fell to Cal State East Bay, 81-68, on Saturday night. Porter once again led CSUSM with 19 points while junior Savannah Camp chipped in 16 points, five rebounds and five assists. 
  • The Cougars continue to lead the CCAA in blocked shots, averaging 3.91 per game.
  • Camp ranks No. 8 in the CCAA in scoring with a 13.9 average per game.
  • Senior guard Ashley Jenkins is second in the conference with a 4.3 assist average.
  • Junior forwards Lupe Cruz and Monica Friedl are No. 2 and No. 3 in the CCAA in blocked shots with 1.3 and 1.1 per game, respectively.  

RUNDOWN OF CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS
  • CSUSM is 1-3 against CSUDH in the all-time series.
  • The Cougars' comeback attempt came up just shy at 67-64 to the Toros on Dec. 29 at The Sports Center. Camp recorded a double-double in the contest with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
  • The Toros have dropped six consecutive games capped by back-to-back road losses to San Francisco State (73-68) and Sonoma State (65-50).
  • CSUDH ranks last in scoring defense in the conference, allowing opponents score 70.1 points per game. The Torros are No. 2 in the CCAA in offensive rebounds at 13.5 per game.
  • Senior guard Imari Brown leads the Torros in points (14.9), steals (1.8) and blocked shots (0.8) per game.
 
CAL STATE L.A. BREAKDOWN
  • CSUSM is 1-3 to CSULA in the all-time series.
  • In their last meeting, the Cougars defeated the Golden Eagles on New Years Eve by a score of 77-68. Camp scored a career-best 29 points, going 10-for-16 from the field in addition to eight rebounds.
  • CSULA won three consecutive games before falling 55-54 at San Francisco State last Saturday.
  • CSULA ranks second to last in the CCAA in 3-point field goal defense, allowing opponents to shoot .326 percent from behind the arc.
  • Da'Jah Jackson and Rikke Fabricius are No. 4 and No. 5 in the conference in scoring, averaging 14.4 and 14.3 points per game, respectively.
 
THE CCAA CONFERENCE
  • Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Conference, made up of 12 Cal State institutions and UC San Diego.
  • The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
 
THE JIMENEZ FILE
  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her second season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its sixth season of existence.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 132-89 in her eight seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
