Slow Start Dooms Cougars in 81-68 Loss to Cal State East Bay

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team could not recover from a slow start and fell to Cal State East Bay by a final score of 81-68 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Saturday at The Sports Center. Seniors Dee Armenta and Ashley Jenkins were honored prior to the contest, as they played in their final home game.

The Cougars drop to 13-10 overall and 10-8 in conference play. The Pioneers improve to 17-8 overall and 14-4 in the CCAA.

CSUSM shot 35.4 percent (23-65) from the floor, 43.8 percent (7-16) from behind the arc and 60 percent (15-25) from the charity stripe. CSUEB went 42.6 percent (29-68) on field goals, 33.3 percent (4-12) on 3-pointers and 73.1 percent (19-26) on free throws. The Cougars were outrebounded 57-34, including 17-8 on the offensive glass.

CSUSM was led by freshman guard Brianna Porter who scored 19 points for the second game in a row. Junior forward Savannah Camp had 16 points, five rebounds and five assists. The Pioneers' Remy Puou and Morgan Greene each recorded a double-double. Puou amassed 19 points and 20 rebounds, while Greene compiled 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cougars struggled at the start and found themselves trailing 10-0, just minutes into the game. CSUSM was down by 18 points, before junior guard Shekinah Broadway hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to go into the end of the first quarter with a 21-6 deficit.

CSUEB extended the margin to 24 points in the second period before the Cougars cut it to 11 points at halftime, 42-31.

CSUSM got to within nine points, 46-37, of the Pioneers on a jumper from junior forward Monica Friedl. It would be the closest the Cougars would get as CSUEB went on an 11-1 run from there. CSUSM would ultimately fall by 13 points.

The Cougars will travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, Feb. 23 in their second-to-last game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
