SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay by a final score of 86-63 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Thursday at The Sports Center. The 86 points was a season-high in offensive output for the Cougars.
CSUSM improves to 13-9 overall and 10-7 in conference play. The Otters drop to 6-19 overall and 3-15 in the CCAA.
The Cougars shot a season-high 55.6 percent (30-54) from the field, 37.5 percent (6-16) from behind the arc and 90.9 percent (20-22) from the charity stripe. CSUMB went 38.2 percent (26-68) on field goals, 29.4 percent (5-17) on 3-pointers and 42.9 percent (6-14) on free throws. CSUSM outrebounded the Otters 37-34.
Freshman guard
Brianna Porter led the Cougars with a season-best 19 points. Junior forward Savanah Camp had 16 points and six rebounds. Junior forward
Monica Friedl pitched in 12 points, six rebounds. McKenna Hill and Alexa Sperling were CSUMB's leading scorers with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Courtney Keaton pulled down 15 rebounds for the Otters.
CSUSM started on fire and raced out to a 29-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cougars extended the margin to 23 points, 42-19, after a layup from Friedl. CSUSM went into halftime with a 46-28 advantage after Camp nailed a layup with the clock winding down.
A basket by Porter at the end of the third period gave the Cougars a 73-40 lead. The Otters outscored the Cougars in the fourth quarter, 23-13. The margin was ultimately insurmountable for CSUMB as CSUSM prevailed by 23.
The Cougars will play their final home game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 18 against Cal State East Bay for Senior Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Prior to the game, CSUSM will honor its two seniors,
Dee Armenta and
Ashley Jenkins, who will be playing for the final time at home.
