SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team will open the 2017 season with a road doubleheader against Vanguard on Friday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. The following day will be the home opener for the Cougars, as they take on local rival San Diego Christian for a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 12 p.m.

THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
- Eight of the 19 players on the roster will be donning Cougar blue for the first time.
- The Cougars went 10-36 overall and 7-29 in conference play in their inaugural CCAA season.
VANGUARD BREAKDOWN
- Vanguard went 34-22 last season.
- CSUSM is 25-11 all-time against Vanguard. The Cougars swept the doubleheader against the Lions, 5-3 and 7-5 (6 inn.), last season.
- Head coach Beth Renkoski is in her 21st season leading the Lions.
SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN BREAKDOWN
- San Diego Christian will play La Sierra in a doubleheader on Wednesday, before taking on the Cougars Friday.
- CSUSM is 8-0 all-time against San Diego Christian.
- The Hawks went 34-17 last season.
- San Diego Christian head coach in her second season is Sarah Kerr. She is assisted by former CSUSM softball player Alex Miller (2011-14).
COACH NEVAREZ
- Head coach Laurie Nevarez is in her fourth season at the helm of the Cougars in 2017.
- Hired in 2014, Nevarez has put together an 83-61-1 (.576) record in her first three years.
- Over her 13-year, head-coaching career, Nevarez has put together a 402-177-2 (.694) overall record. Prior to her time at CSUSM, Nevarez coached NCAA Division III Redlands for 10 seasons.
THE CCAA
- Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), made up of 12 Cal State institutions and UC San Diego.
- The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
