SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team wraps up its regular season this weekend on the road before competing the CCAA Conference Tournament next week. CSUSM basketball season officially begins this Friday with the men's team hosting a two-day tournament, the CCAA/PacWest Challenge, at The Sports Center while the women compete in the California Baptist Conference Challenge.

CAL BAPTIST
  • The Cougars dropped their only meeting against then-No. 2 CBU, 83-51, last season at the #CSUSMHoops Classic at The Sports Center. Senior guard Raegan Lillie tallied 12 points while senior forward Lupe Cruz registered nine points and five rebounds.
  • Despite winning the PacWest Conference regular season title and tournament title in addition to being the 2017 NCAA Division II West Region Champion, the Lancers were picked to finish third in the conference's preseason poll this season.
  • CBU graduated five influential seniors including PacWest Female Athlete of the Year Cassidy Mihalko.  
 
SIMON FRASER
  • This will be the first meeting between these two teams.
  •  SFU was picked to finish fifth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) preseason poll after ending the 2016-17 season third in the conference standings.
  • The Clan said goodbye to their top-five scorers including Meg Wilson who averaged 14.2 points per game.
 
CSUSM BREAKDOWN
  • In the 2017-18 CCAA women's basketball preseason poll, the Cougars were picked to finish fourth this season.
  • The Cougars finished last season No. 8 in the CCAA standings and would have qualified for the conference tournament if CSUSM was eligible for postseason.
  • CSUSM returns three starters including All-CCAA second team honoree Savannah Camp.
  • Camp averaged 13.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season. She registered 13 double-digit games including a 29-point performance against Cal State L.A. on Dec. 31.
  • In 2016-17, CSUSM tallied a conference-best four blocked shots per game average and was ranked second in points per game with a 65.2 average.
  • CSUSM is upperclassman heavy with eight seniors and three juniors. The Cougars return nine and will have eight new faces wearing Cougar Blue this season.

BIOLA
  • CSUSM comes in 2-2 all-time against the Eagles.
  • In the last meeting, BU took down the Cougars 65-61, Nov. 11, 2016 at Biola. Josh Spiers hit seven-threes and had a team high 24 points in the contest. His seven threes tie a school record for most threes in a game.
  • The Eagles lost four starters from a team that finished with 26 wins a season ago. They were selected to finish ninth in the Preseason PacWest Poll. This marks the first official season in the PacWest Conference.
  • BU returns last year's third leading scorer, Trevor Treinen (10.3) as well as Alex Talma, who played in all 32 games last season and averaged 8.4 points per game.
 
CONCORDIA – IRVINE
  • The Cougars have won the last four meetings between the two teams and holds a 4-1 all-time record over the Eagles.
  • The last time out, CSUSM took down CUI 78-65 on Nov. 12, 2016 on the road in Irvine. CSUSM's Ethan Alvano scored a game-high 32 points.
  • Like CSUSM, this season marks the first year as official members of the NCAA Div. II for the Eagles. They were selected to finish fourth in the PacWest Conference preseason poll. In their first two years in the league they have gone a combined 28-12.
  • Returner JT Roach was selected to the Preseason All-PacWest team this season after playing in 27 games, averaging 16.7 points per game and had a team high 25 steals.
 
CSUSM BREAKDOWN
  • The Cougars were selected to finish tied for seventh in the 2017-18 DII West Region Media Preseason Poll as well as selected to finish third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Preseason poll.
  • CSUSM returns four starters, seniors Ethan Alvano, Joe Boyd and Josh Spiers who were named All-CCAA selections a season ago.
  • Alvano, the 2016-17 CCAA Newcomer of the Year, led the conference in points per game (17.9), assists (5.6) and was second in steals (2.2). He set a school record in points (36) in a double-overtime win over Cal State East Bay. He also tied a school record with 14 assists in a single game against Stanislaus State.
  • Boyd will man the interior once again after averaging a double-double inside for CSUSM. He set a school record in multiple categories including, most total rebounds in a single season (280), most rebounds per game (10.0), total defensive rebounds (214), he led the team in FG% (.562) and was second on the team in points per game (13.8) and total blocks (11).
  • Josh Spiers, a senior guard, converted 48.8 percent of his 3-pointers last season and ranked second in the CCAA in 3-point shooting. He was third in points per game (13.5) and led the team in blocks (14).
  • Senior guard, Brian Wright, played in all 28 games for CSUSM averaging 8.9 points and 2.6 assists per game while averaging 28 minutes a game.

CAL STATE L.A.
  • The Cougars tallied 14 total blocks in the sweep (25-21, 25-20, 25-18) over the Golden Eagles on Oct. 10 at The Sports Center.
  • CSULA snapped a four-game win streak with two four-set losses last week against Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. The Golden Eagles are fighting UCSD and CSUDH for the final two spots in the CCAA Tournament from the South Division.
  • The Golden Eagles are holding opponents to a CCAA-best 11.69 kills per set average while ranking last in both service aces (1.17) and digs (14.36) per set.
  • Freshman outside hitter Karla Santos ranks second in the conference with a 3.90 kills per set average.

CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS
  • With CSUSM's sweep over CSUDH on Oct. 3, the teams are now tied at 3-3 in the all-time series.
  • With two South Division spots still open for the CCAA tournament, CSUDH will be attempting to secure one of them this weekend.
  • CSUDH is only ranked in the top three in one category in the CCAA, tallying 2.24 in blocks per set puts them third behind CSUSM and UCSD.
  • Senior middle blocker Morelia Castro (1.09) and junior middle blocker Cecelia Lucas (0.86) rank fourth and 10th, respectively, in the CCAA in blocks per set.
 
CSUSM BREAKDOWN
  • Once again, the Cougars made history on Saturday with their first win over UC San Diego in program history, With the win, CSUSM punched it ticket to the 2017 CCAA Tournament hosted Nov. 16-18 in San Francisco.
  • The Cougars continue to lead the CCAA and ranks 15th in the nation with a 2.40 block per set average. Junior middle blocker Faith Fortuné is CCAA's block leader with a 1.29 block per set average.
  • Freshman libero Grecia Cordero-Barr continues to lead the CCAA in digs, averaging 4.81 per set.
