SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team opened California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action with a 74-71 victory over two-time defending conference tournament champion Cal State Easy Bay on Thursday night at The Sports Center.
The Cougars improve to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in CCAA play while the Pioneers drop to 4-5, 1-3 CCAA.
Three Cougars reached double-digits with senior
Savannah Camp leading the way with 17 points. Senior
Stephanie Somers chipped in 12 points and senior
Lupe Cruz added ten points. Camp pulled down seven boards while seniors
Monica Friedl and
Raegan Lillie each notched six rebounds.
The Cougars trailed until the 3:58 mark of the fourth quarter when sophomore
Brianna Porter drove to the basket for a lay-up to make it 64-63 CSUSM.
CSUSM stayed on top throughout the remaining time but three free throws by CSUEB's Janae Chamois at the 17 second mark cut the Cougar lead to 70-68. Camp sunk two free throws before the Pioneers' Elayshia Woolridge drained a 3-pointer to make it a one-point ballgame with two seconds remaining. Back-to-back made free throws by junior
Juliet Jones secured CSUSM's first win of the 2017-18 season at 74-71.
CSUSM shot 57.1 percent from the field (16-of-28) and outscored CSUEB, 45-29, in the second half. The Cougars concluded the game with a 47.4 percentage (27-of-57) from the field.
Chamois led the Pioneers with 16 points while Woolridge finished with 15 points.
