LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team dropped an 82-76 decision to Dominican on Saturday afternoon in the UC San Diego Thanksgiving Classic held at RIMAC Arena.
"We have to keep working and keep getting better every day in practice and every game," said head coach
Renee Jimenez. "Obviously starting the preseason this way was not our plan and we're much better than our 0-4 record and I know everyone in our locker room believes that. We're a very good team but we have seen some great teams. We aren't there yet and haven't been able to put together a complete game. We're excited to start CCAA play this week and have a clean slate. We are battle tested and looking forward to making a nice run in the conference."
The Cougars conclude their tough nonconference schedule at 0-4 while the Penguins improve to 3-2 overall.
Senior guard
Savannah Camp tallied a season-high 27 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Sophomore guard
Brianna Porter notched eight rebounds and six points. Senior forward
Raegan Lillie added 13 points and three assists.
A Lillie 3-pointer with six seconds remaining in the second quarter cut Dominican's lead to 37-34.
A 3-pointer by sophomore
Chloe Eackles at the 4:38 mark evened the game at 43-43 but the Penguins would go on a 17-5 run to close out the third quarter at 60-48.
The Cougars erased a 15-point deficit to get within two points with 26 seconds remaining in the game after Porter made two free throws.
Dominican's Anjelica Collins sunk all four of her free throws to give the Penguins the 82-76 victory.
Natalie Diaz led Dominican's offense with 31 points while Sandra Ikeora notched a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds.
The Cougars finally host their home opener as well as begin their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule next week when they welcome Cal State East Bay to The Sports Center on Thursday, Nov. 30. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
