RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball dropped its 2017-18 season opener, 80-63, in the CBU Conference Challenge to host California Baptist on Saturday. It was the inaugural game in the CBU Event Center and the Lancers had more than 1,000 fans including their band.
"Obviously, this wasn't the outcome we wanted and I didn't think we earned the right to win the game," said head coach
Renee Jimenez. "We did not play our best basketball and were a little rattled to start the game which took us out of any offensive rhythm. We have to be better tomorrow on both ends of the court."
Senior
Savannah Camp was
CSUSM's top scorer with 23 points, going 7-of-16 from the field. Junior
Baylee Olsen and sophomore
Stephanie Custodio each chipped in 12 points. Senior forward

CSUSM trailed 21-7 after the opening quarter but a 19-12 second quarter closed the gap to 33-26 at the halftime break. Olsen dropped four 3-pointers in the first half as CSUSM shot 31.3 percent from behind the arc while keeping the Lancers to a 14.3 (2-of-14) percentage.
A 3-pointer by sophomore
Juliet Jones cut the CBU lead to 39-34 but an 8-2 Lancer run put the gap back into double-digits. CBU shot 52.7 percent from the field in the second half to clinch the win.
CBU's Ane Olaeta Larrauri led all scorers with 24 points while Tori Mitchell narrowly missed out on a double-double, finishing with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
